A couple of quick questions from a new lifter..

Hey everyone,

Well, i'm basically 150 lbs and i'm 19. I'm really looking to bulk up since i'm so skinny. I just started attending college and we have a nice rec-center so I figure I might as well as take advantage of what i'm paying for. I'm pretty serious about this, I have a friend who lifts with me and we got a plan going and stuff. I'm just wondering a couple of things. First of all, will drinking things like coffee and caffinated soda effect my results? Also, I know protein is a biggy but I was wondering which supplement would be best, I don't want some huge supplement plan or anything.. but just something I can buy at GNC or whatever, whatever works .

Anyways, thanks for you time.

Joe

All protein powders work , but some are not as high quality as others , look out for EAS's brands or OptimumNutrions

Coffee is cool. Dump the soda, man.

The amount of benefit that your body will gain from increased protein consumption is a function of your workout intensity. The additional amino acids that protein supplies will only be used if the body needs them—and the body will only need them if you sufficiently tax it.

While supplement protein powders can provide a wonderfully dense source of quality protein, unrefined sources of complete proteins exist that will do just fine for most people: lean meat, eggs, low-fat cottage cheese, etc.

Replace the soda with water, and lots of it. Most people don't realize the benifit of drinking water throughout the day. I always carry a 32 oz Gatorade bottle full of water with me throughout the day and during my workout (which I refill 3-4 times daily). It's good for you, and free compared to overpriced sodas.

Thanks alot for the input, I appreciate it.

"..look out for EAS's brands or OptimumNutrions.."

Does that mean, look out as in don't get that, or look out because they're good? If they're bad, what's a couple of good brands, or brands that work?

I'll also have to consider the other protein sources, guess I never really thought about that. Also, I will start forcing myself to drink more water, but I really like mountain dew I know water is good for you, but how does it exactly effect things like your workout and energy level compared to soda?

Thanks again,
Joe

Water keeps your muscles hydrated which will add to your strength. Dehydration will cause a surprising loss in that area. Caffinated drinks are a diuretic so it pulls water out of your system. That is why water is better.

As for supps, a good whey protein immediately after your workout is imperative. Add some simple carbs (like dextrose) maybe a bit of creatine to the drink and you will be good to go. Some antioxidents are always beneficial if you can afford them. Take advantage of your schools meal plan and eat healthy. Look for quality carbs and proteins in your cafeteria.

Joe,

When I got out of college I weighed about 135 lbs. I have been working out for over a year and now I weigh 160 lbs. Over that time I have tried many supplements. After spending all that money, I have decided to stick with protein (shakes) and creatine suppliments. I took that extra money I saved and put it toward healthy snacks for around the clock snacking. Just remember, supplements won't do nothing for you unless your workout is productive and you take the supplements at the right times.

Joe if you want to bulk up a lot you gotta eat a lot. Overeating is great for muscle gain, but you gotta cycle it. Here's a good diet for bulking up and it works...
