alternative to weight training?

i don't have access to a weight room and i only have two 20 pound dumbells. i'm just looking to drop bodyfat and i'm wondering if certain types of full body cardio like basketball will help substitute for the weights as far as reducing muscle loss.

Sports, such as basketball, will help. For me, it simply works as high intensity cardio. Which is all your gonna need if you just wanna drop bodyfat. The difference being, your not gonna have results as fast. Muscle burns fat...plain and simple. But sports such as basketball, football, etc. - will definately bring up your leg strength. And you can try simple body weight excercies for now. Do push ups, crunches, etc. Invest in a pull up bar. That kind of thing, until you can possibly get access to some more serious weights.

the thing is i think i may have a good bit of muscle already. i'm 6'3" 195lbs at 15.5% bodfyfat. i think i have around 164lbs of LBM or something. do you think if i play basketball everyday and did like crunches and pushups every other day that i could get to 9% bodyfat without getting that "skinny fat" look?

Basketball will maintain the muscle mass that's required to play the game ... no more. Your body will see no justification for keeping anything more than that.

Why not get a quality set of resistance bands?

It's almost spring so get outside and do this stuff for free:

Any solid branch makes a good pullup bar. Throw rocks in an old backpack and do squats and pushups with the full sack. Lift odd objects overhead (logs, rocks, whatever) to build shoulder strength.
