Any advice for a skinny guy wanting to lose love handles?

I'm a thin guy because the fat I do have is all in my stomach. I don't want to go on the latest fad diets, Adtkins, s. Beach, whatever...I think those will cause me to lose weight all over and I don't have much weight to give up. I've been eating better and regular excercise with crunches, sit up's for a little over a month. Not really any results. Any advice on how to lose the gut on a skinny guy. Thanks!

unfortuntately, it is impossible to lose weight only in one area. it comes of proportionally from everywhere. also there is no such thing as spot reduction, in case you didn't know. for example, you can do a million crunches but its not gonna give you a flat stomach. i would suggest searching around the boards for advice on good nutrition, and simply following that. also cardio is important. good luck

Thanks ...after a few months of crunches and no results, I believe you. I'll check out out the boards on nutrition and cardio.

JDA, I'm in the same boat you're in, man. I think what we have to do is quite a bit of cardio and try to eat simple sugars (ie. sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, and whatnot) only post-workout. It blows because we must have fairly low bf%. I bet if you did bf% regional tests, we'd have <1% everywhere and 30% near and around stomach. oh well, damn genetics. anyways, good luck man. i've been doing some searching too. let me know if you find anything worthwhile.

Goon -

I'll check out the bf%..now I'm curious. Do you mean eat simple sugars after workout? Thanks...I'm glad I'm not the only one looking for a solution!

Yeh, simple sugars only post-workout. I'm goin out on a limb saying if we eat them at any other time, it only makes it harder to cut the gut. Which brings about another point...just thinking about it now...it makes logical sense to eat simple before complex no matter what time for this reason:
Simple ---> faster absorption
Complex ---> slower absorption

Why would one want to consume something more readily absorbed (simple)after something slower (complex)? Think about it, the system is already working on the slow after ingestion...any additional carbs (esp. simple) would contribute to excess, thus fat. Makes sense does it not? Cursor, anyone, thoughts?

Agree. Makes sense...I'm going to read up more on simple vs. complex. I'll let you know.

agree with Maurer (again). if you have fat prodominantly in the stomach area, then if you want to loose it, you'll have too loose fat all over. then if you want to put more weight back on you need to do this with a good diet combined weight lifting so that what you put back on is quality muscle and not fat good luck guys!
oh and i think doing crunches will give results, it will help develop your abs, its just that you cant see them as their under the fat in your stomach, loose that weight and you should be able to see them. my 2c

if your really dieting good then its probably o.k. to do some weighted crunches or use the sit up machine with heavy weight. When a guy with a big gut uses weight for crunches it only pushes the fat out that much farther. However if you only have fat around the belly button area try doing weighted crunches and sit ups. !!!!NOW for the problem with that. If your like me my chest isn't that big so if i do too much weight the top portion of my abs stick out past my chest giving me the bird look so watch out for that!!!!!!! just try this for a week and see what you come up with?

I have the same problem as you guys. I am 5' 6.5" and 134lb. I have flab in the abdominal area.

So far, i have been dieting for 3 weeks and see great results. The only way I’ve started to see results was when i started to diet and continue to workout. I have lose a substantial amount of bf by dieting and only lost a pound, but kept the muscle. I was 135 and went to 134 over 3 weeks so i am keeping the muscle and loosing the bf.

The bf is disappearing, so the only way i see the fat going away is by just dieting, unfortunately.

Deputy - Thanks for the advice! do you know much about crunches? ..I've searched everywhere but I can't find anything to tell me the amount of reps I should be doing with crunches. First, can you tell me what you mean by weighted crunch? I've been doing cross-knee abdominal crunches and the normal ab crunch on the ground. As a beginner, I'm not sure how many to reps to do, so I just do them until they hurt! They take awhile because I'm told I need to hold my position about 30 degrees off the ground..each rep is about 2 seconds. What's the right way to complete reps? thanks again for your help!

Jude - Cool...I'm 5' 10" and 160 lbs and I appear really thin to everyone, but if they saw my stomach they would see how out of shape I am...I really need to lose the weight around my stomach and upper body...genetics..I'm gonna look like my Dad if I don't take care of it now...big pot belly, skinny legs and no butt! so, tell me what kind of diet your on because it sounds like it's working for you? Or if you don't have diet plan, are you just eating better? I want to eat the right foods, but just not sure if I'm even eating the right stuff... this morning I had half cup of low carb yogurt, half a grapefruit and 1 cup of raisin bran..oh yea, I forgot I'm a freak and need a cup a java in the morning before my kids wake up....gets me through the morning! thanks!

Avatar - good answer! I figured I would have to lose weight all over and then work on my abs. Now the hard part is understanding the type of diet to pursue! thanks.

For reps you should do 3 sets of 15 reps for crunches.

About dieting, you need to find out your bmr, go here this thread explains it all http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/s...ead.php?t=1222

That thread will help you find out how many calories you should eat each day and how many to subtract.

Then i suggest to read this thread too http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/s...ead.php?t=2764

About what to eat heres a good grocery list:
