What lift was this? Squat? Deadlift? Bench? That will help us out a little.

And did you do warmups first? I lift four days a week and no matter how fresh I feel I always do warmups with light weights to get my body ready.

Doh. My bad. Sorry.

The squat causes back pain for lots of people, but it usually is because of form. When the back is hurting, it usually is because the squatter is rounding the back or isn't keping the core tight enough. I've been guilty of these and have had similar pains, wrenches and pulls.

Check out some links and see if you are making any form errors. There are tons of other links out there. These are just three I pulled up in a quick Google search (I am not affiliated with any of these sites).

also make sure that by keeping your back in a strong arch, you arent leaning too far forward. granted with heavier weight you naturally move forward, but you just have to find the balance between weight and form (just like any exercise).
