Beginner

Hello everyone.....this is a really good forum..ive been reading it alot lately...i just started working out..anyways, i want more definition in my muscles and i need to loose about 15-20 pounds...I would love to look like those women on the bow flex commercials! ha My workout goes like this...i do stretches first, then weights..about 3 sets of 12, then i hit the treadmill for a half hour....my diet is this: a slim fast for breakfast with added protien powder...a extremely light lunch and dinner. I work out about 4 days a week...does this sound like a good plan?? I would really appreciate any advice!

Hey suzyq6, you've brought a very old thread back from the dead haven't you?

Sorry, we cannot answer your question at this time because we don't know enough about you. We need to know things like
Age, height, weight, goals (i.e. lose fat, gain muscle, tone up) not "look like a woman on a bowflex commercial."

We need to know where you are starting to help you get where you want to go.

On the surface, I'd say you aren't eating enough to keep a bird alive. I've made a diet plan for a 104lb woman recently that has about twice that amount of food in it. She's "toning". I hate that word. That's the feminine euphamism for building muscle to burn off some extra fat.

So, start a thread about you. Post up your stats. Post your workout - what lifts you do, what cardio you do, when you do them. Post your diet (the actual foods you eat) and you will get some good suggestions.

There are some people here who have made some very dramatic changes in their bodies and can really help you out. They certainly helped me. I was once a 300lb tub of lard.

Another good thing to do is start an online training journal. Yep you can do that free right here at DF. That way we can see what you are doing, cheer you on, monitor your progress, and suggest changes to your routine to help you make it more effective.

And before I forget....welcome to DF. A great fitness community and we are glad you decided to join us.

Hi Suzy,

Could you be more specific about your diet, exactly what you are eating? I agree with awelch, my guess is you are not eating nearly enough. That is counterproductive to toning, which as Andy says, is really just building muscle and burning some fat.

Could you be more specific about your lifting routine? Are you lifting enough weight so that the last rep or two is a struggle? Which exercises are you choosing?

Back Fat

I have another question....will the fat that you gain on your back..(the rolls just under your bra line)..will it go away gradually with weight loss...and is it good to use a row machine to work these muscles?

All fat comes and goes according to you genetics and lifestyle (included fitness level, age and calorie intake).

Rowing is an excellent exercise. There are rowing machines for cardiovascular conditioning and rowing stations with weight stacks which are used for building specifically the latissimus dorsi (large back muscles).
