Beginning Weight Training

Hi guys,

I'm new around here. I have been lurking for a few months now and finally decided to post something!

When beginning weight training, is it preferable to have already lost the majority of fat through cardio before you begin?

I have lost around 13kgs in 12 weeks, by eating well and doing cardio for an hour twice a week. I now weigh 101kgs. My goal is 90kg.

Should I first lose that 11kgs before I start extensive weight training or what?

Here are my stats:
  • Age: 16
  • Height: 6"2 (188cm)
  • Weight: 101kg (222lbs)

Your input would be most appreciated!

That's smooth, ashleyr—a 28 lbs loss. So, now at 222 lbs, and wanting to drop to 198 lbs, eh? I wouldn't wait ... pick up the weights now! Do you own weights, or do you belong to a gym?

Hi Cursor,

Thanks for the reply!

I belong to a gym, that's where I've been doing my cardio. I have been considering purchasing a weight bench and some free weights..

I still have a well rounded beer belly, that's more or less the reason I was concerned about losing the weight before starting a weight training routine.

That will obviously disappear with a good training routine and healthy diet, no?

Ashley.

great fat loss theyr mate

doing some weight training will probably assist with faster fat loss when combined with your cardio. for one you will gain more muscle mass which in itself will burn more cals thus more fat, and also the training itself is using alot of cals. plus the HIT (gym) will help increase basal metabolic rate (resting metabolism)

may need to workout a program though so that as for example, it would be hard to do cardio after doing a leg day (maybe swimming or punch bag etc which would only be ok if upper body is good!) or split the cardio up like 2-3 days after leg day.

just my 2 cents

again congrats on the improved lifestyle changes and stick with it and im sure you will achieve your goals.

At the moment, it looks like I will only be able to make it to the gym twice a week, Tuesday and Friday. Is this enough? Should I just do a full body workout on both of those days, and go for a walk after work every other day?

Thanks for all the replies, your input is most appreciated!
