help out the newb!!

Hi everyone. Im new to the board and to the world of bodybuilding. I' have some questions for all of you. I tried a search and learned quite a bit but I still have some questions that need to be answered.

I'm male, 5'8, 148 lbs, 19 years old and i dont have a clue what my bf% is (how do i go about finding that out?) I used to work out almost every day the first two years of High School but I was never two serious and never really experienced the types of gains i wanted (my max weight then was 135).

ok, so I've decided that I want to become serious about body building and fitness. I want to do bodybuilding as a sport, but I dont want to be huge or competitive. I just want to look good, feel good, be strong, and be healthy.

I want to start by lowering my carb intake (I eat alot of bread, pasta, and rice) and uping my protein intake. I want to start by consuming 1.5g of protein per lb and then once I grow a substancial amount lower that to 1g of protein per lb. I've been using nitrotech, but now that I'm back at college I cant afford to use it anymore(I'll be switching to optimum when this tub is done). I want to take 100 grams of the nitrotech everyday. The only problem with that is that 200mg of cholesterol come with it. I currently have a cholesterol level of 189 (200 is considered bad) All the whey proteins I've looked at have a comparable amount of cholesterol in them. DO you think this type of cholesterol intake would put my cholesterol level into the "danger zone" Is there a whey protein out there that doesnt have so much cholesterol in it? I've found that ready to drink shakes and juices dont have any cholesterol in them...but they're rediculously expense. anyone have any advice or suggestions? feel free to give me any other tips that arent related to my questions. any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

Welcome to the boards Paul To find out your bf%, you have to get calipers. You can put calipers in the search and threads about them will come up.

About Cholesterol, eating cholesterol doesn't really raise cholesterol. Eating x amount of cholesterol might raise it a little, but hardly. What raises cholesterol to the "danger zone" is eating the bad fats. Stay away from saturated fats and trans fats and you'll be fine.

So do you have your diet plan made up already, and if so it would be a good idea to post it in the diet and nutrition forum so that you get more help in that area And what is your current weight training split?

thanks for the reply. that was really informative and useful. I dont have a diet set up yet but I do have an appointment with a nutritionist coming up in a week. I'm a starving college student so I eat a lot of fast food cause its quick and cheap. It's going to take a lot of hard work to eat right, but I'm willing to work hard for what i want. Also, I havent started training yet but once I get my diet right, I'm going to start a general conditioning program of 4 days a week...chest/triceps/abs....back/biceps.....legs/shoulders/abs with a day of rest inbetween each and then repeat. iI do 4 sets of each excersise. I try to do as much weight as I can handle for 6-8 reps but a lot of the time I end up being able to do the first set really easily and not being able to do even 2 reps by the ffourth. This happens mostly with my chest, I don thave as much of a problem with the other muscle groups. Once IU've done 6 weeks of general conditioning I plan on switching on working each different muscle group individually(abs will be put in with other muscle groups though) Chest...arms/abs...back...legs/abs. I'll still do 4 sets for 6-8 reps on all the excercises. sound good? by the way, mustang GT...where in NJ are you from? I'm from piscataway iin central jersey. any more help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

Paul, do yourself a big favor and stop spending your hard-earned money on supplements.
Don't worry about measuring carbs or protein or anything else. What it all comes down to is CALORIES.
Take a good look at prisoners: they don't count any grams of carbs or protein or fat. They eat whatever they are given. Sometimes it's down-right slop. However, they train like animals. That's why they are so massive and ripped, not because of some supplement or special way of eating......that's all just hype and lies spread by the magazines to get you to shell out $50.00 on the "latest" supplement garbage.
Believe me when I say that you can do it without diets or supplements.....I know from personal experience: with the grace of God, I was able to go from 147 to over 190 without it....and eating whatever I want, when I want.
Also, don't worry about your body fat percentage. What matters more is how you LOOK in the mirror, not what some number says. When you are walking on the beach with your shirt off and people see your abs showing while you have veins all over your powerful arms, they aren't going to care whatsover what your body fat "percentage" is, they are just going to be impressed with your physique.
Hope that's a beginning.....
