help! pec injury

two years ago when i started working out i was doing 30-50 pushups everyday in an effort to help build up my chest (in addition to my resistance training). my trainer did not know about this. anyway, after an intense chest workout with my trainer about a month in, strange things started happening to my right pec. a few days later, i started to get a horrible itching sensation in my nipple and there was a bump not there before. the next day or so, the whole pec started hurting, and the day after that, i was in unbearable pain. after seeing a few doctors who really couldnt tell me much, i saw a physical therapist who said i had a partial tear. for a month i had to quit training and i was receiving physical therapy 5 days a week. for the next 10 months i could only do chest exercises with very light weight (5-10 lbs on bb bench, 10-20 lbs db press). finally, a year after my injury, i returned to full strength, except for one thing....pullups. i could absolutely not do pullups, even assisted pullups, or it would wreak havoc on my pec. anyway, 2 years later and i can only bench around 175 per set.

about 3 weeks ago, i noticed some pain while doing dumbell flies. i have reaggravated my pec before, but usually one trip to the physical therapist and i was fine. after seeing my PT, he said it was just knotted up, and he gave me an ultrasound and did some work. that was last week. i am still in alot of pain and have not been able to work out since. this is a little over 2 years after the original injury. i am worried that my injury was either not diagnosed or treated correctly, and am desperate to figure out how to make it 100% again so that i can do everything and not experience any more relapses. my dad is a doctor(internist) and has scheduled an appt for me with another doctor. i am not sure this will help though. to be honest, i am not even sure how i injured my pec. can someone please shed some light on the situation for me?

thanks!

If you're not sure of whats causing the pain then you should probably stay off the chest for a while. I'd also try to stay off of any exercise in which its movement uses any parts of the chest, just to be safe. A lot of triceps and back exercises use the chest as a synergists (including the pull-up, which uses pectoralis minor and the sternal head of the pectoralis major). If you've had a muscle tear before then you don't want to mess with it, because tears are serious. Some people can experience tears and never workout like they normally could ever again; sometimes it's that serious. If you still want to lift weights then doing exercises that involve the biceps or the leg muscles would be okay, because they don't require any help from any of the chest muscles, but you still might not want to do anything until you get it checked out.

A good rule to go by when weight lifting is that if it hurts, don't mess with it. In your case, with that previous tear, you should get it checked out.

Seems to me that you were carrying too heavy too soon. You've not been lifting because of the injurie. So now that you're back, you should start on lighter weights instead of pushing the recovered muscle to the max. You should go easy on it. For now, the most advisable thing to do is, stay of the pecs...
