how does music affect your workout?
when i work out, i vastly prefer dance/hip-hop/rap type music - heavy, steady drum track with vocals i can ignore and neat sound effects. the gym's got two TVs for the benefit of ppl on the treadmill and it's always set to MuchMusic. sometimes, though, kids'll come in with a boombox, turn down the TV while making loud comments about the music, and put on something along the lines of Pantera, Slipknot, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, or similar heavy metal-slash-goth rock type stuff.
the funny thing is, even though it's supposedly very energetic music, i instantly feel all energy just swoosh right out of me, my head gets confused, and i just want to go home.
anybody else find the ambient sound at the gym affects the quality of their workout? what kind of music/noise do you prefer when you're working out?

I am too focused on my weight training. I zone out all that background noise unless i am doing cardio, then i just bounce along with whatever is playing

That's exactly the type of stuff I play at home. I have a pretty wide range of musical interests, but for strength training I just need something fast and angry. I prefer techno/electronica type stuff for cardio though.

I get pretty jacked up before I leave the house, Tool and Alice in Chains specifically. It gets me into a more aggressive mood.

with me i would play some psych up music sometimes when doing my workout, but like all of you say, i normally tune out of the music and into my workout after the 1st 2 sets or so.
But what annoys me is people around if they are laughing or telling jokes, i'd honestly like to tell them to "go f*ck themselves", so that isn't music but its unnecessary ambience that can buckle your last few reps on a given workout as a result of some jackass coming to the Gym to socialise.
Oh well tho, with training at home, i have to train myself, if i have mates around i wont be as focused, becuase i dont want them to be watching or ready to talk or something, so the Music is okay.. but like said you tune yourself out of it.
oh and guys as wierd or humorous as it may sound, my favourite psych up music is the Guile music from Street Fighter 2 (yes i loved it as a kid)

i dnno.. this song psychs me up before i train but thats me LOL.

Alternative rock..... Linkin Park, Audioslave, System of a Down. They play it at my gym by my work. It's awesome! At the gym by my house they play pop...I can't stand it!

I don't listen to anything when I workout. I am forced to listen to crappy music at my school gym.

Well that's almost exclusively what I do in the weight room. You have to have rest between sets, so why not spend it talking to some buds? Then you just focus when you step into the rack. (Of course on maxes and stuff I'm pretty intense til I do it)

I don't really listen to the music while I'm actually in the act of lifting, but between sets I've been known to bust a move to the chagrin of my lifting partners.
By the way Vas85, I listened to the Guile music from SF2... brings me waaaaaaaay back. :
