If you want it to be muscle - it totally depends on your training, diet, rest...

For most of the people I've known - it took about 5-10 years to gain that much muscle.

If you just want weight, eat crap...lots of it, you can make it in a year.

sorry for posting it twice i saw more people on begginer so i decided to post it there after already posting it. i think 5 years is a long time because i am only 16 and still growing even if i didn't lift. my brother is about 3 years older than me and he is about 4 inches taller and weighs about 200 pounds. i don't think i will get as tall as him.

Well all anyone can really tell you is eat big and clean (enough to grow on, but not enough to get fat on), lift hard, and get lots of rest.

If you do these things you will grow as much as your body will allow - how much or how long it will take simply depends on 1 how well you do those three things, and how your body responds to it based on your genetics.

Good luck reaching your goal.

It will all depend on genetics and your dedication and knowledge of your body. A clean 40lb gain Id say about 3 years. That is quite a gain. Look at 18 1 litre water bottles the size of it thats what you are looking to put on

According to this article on Bodybuilding.com this kid has gained 50 pounds in two years.

If you scroll down to #4 under Protein Myths you will see that Jay Cutler claims to have gained 50 pounds in two years also.

What these guys did took dedication to their workout, diet, and recovery processes - consistently and persistently - to reach their goals. At 16 years of age you can be very large by 20 years. Make a deal with yourself not to be sporadic in your training and especially your eating and you will the gains you seek.

Far too many variables to even give you a close answer.

For instance, when I started lifting seriously, I put on 42lbs in about 6 months (note I said lbs, it wasn't all muscle). However, it might take you 6 years..........there is no real way for anonymous people on a message board to give you any kind of valid answer without knowing a LOT more about you.

I don't believe Cutler was juicing when he first started bodybuilding at age 19 (I could be wrong, I don't know him personally). From what I have read about him he was a good football player and weighed about 170 pounds or so. These were his newbie gains, not what he has done since turning pro. At that age, with complete dedication to diet, workout, recovery, and genetic potential it is entirely possible to put on that much size.

Brat, we have another troll. I won't feed it if you'll make it go away.

How did a serious question, albeit one with no good answer, become a spam target like this?
