Depends on how many exercises, sets, and reps you plan on doing for each body part. Lifting style (to failure, etc) also plays a part. Do you have a current workout?

That will depend on exercise volume & intensity. What also matters is how you feed and rest your body after the workouts.
beat me by a hair, IronMan...

I don't quite follow your program, but,...
Can you describe your routine in terms of sets and reps?
The idea of doing 45 minutes of chest work just SOUNDS exhausting!

The rest that I'm referring to is not the pause between lifing sets, but rather the number of days that you rest between days of lifting.

depends on the factors already listed such as:
Presented fatigue, frequency of your stimuli and cycling of your intensity/volume.
Often when i train with a higher volume 8-12reps (is alot for me) i'll do what is called feeder work the next day. Feeder work is a method used by the Soviet and Bulgairan olympic teams back iin their dominace and is still being used today as a way of restoration. (recovering) They would basicly work the same lifts or muscle groups the following day or they would do some form of gpp/spp work. Gpp/spp is more total body conditioning then anything. This helps muscles to recover and helps stabilize your CNS.

As near as I can figure from your description, morgan156, I would only work out each body part once per week.

Simple -- You'll be able to/should workout more often if you are pussy-footing around in the gym and not working your muscles maximally....if you are applying 100% intensity in the gym each time, working out each body part once per week is all that you need!

Powerlifters and olympic lifters (strength people) would laugh if you said you only have to lift one time a week. If you aren't going to failure (taxing your CNS), you can work out and lift 3-5 days a week.

I read somewhere, large muscles need more time to recover.
legs,back-once a week
chest,shoulders-twice a week
arms-3 times a week
abs-4 times a week
I just wrote this down off the top of my head, it's just an example, everyone is different.
You should always work out until failure.

I think he meant how many times per week FOR EACH BODY PART can/should you lift...not how many times a week should you lift.

Yea I knew thats what he meant. I was letting him know that olympic lifters do some variation of the snatch and clean and jerk up to 5 times a week. The Westside powerlifting method, very popular, has bench work twice a week and squat work twice a week, plus GPP (pulling a sled, sledgehammer stuff, chopping wood) a few times a week.
