How soon after a workout is protien needed?

I know that it is a good thing to eat protien after a workout but how long is too long? I work out at 6am and usualy cant get a good meal with meat in until noon or 5pm. Is this waiting too long? If i do this over a period of time, what would be the effect?

Certainly, you want to feed with a good dose of protein very soon after your workout (both weights AND cardio). An hour after ... maybe. By noon ... WAY too long (you will have lost your anabolic opportunity).

In a study, people that immediately consumed a carb/protein drink gained muscle.

The next group of people had the same shake 2 hrs later. They LOST muscle.

Well, that kinda depends on your definition of "a lot of protein". Besides after workout I just shoot for 1g / LBM. That's only like 30g a meal for me.

Having excess around greatly helps increase protein synthesis after your workout.
