How to drop dumbells?
Ok, I'm starting to get uneven while i bench. The bar drops to my right side because my left side is weaker. So I know I should just go to the dumbells, but here is the problem. I don't know how to drop them right. I'm talking about heavier weights where I won't have enough arm strength to just slowly put them down. However, the gym says not to drop the weights and I'm kinda scared I will hurt my elbows if I just let them fall.
How do you guys drop your dumbells?

Why do u need to drop them? When I'm done, I just bring the dbs towards my chest in the bottom position and sit up.
Even if u do need to put them down, put it down in a controlled manner. Say u'r benching 75lb dbs. And u can control at most 60lbs db to put down. Then just exert that force and put the 75s down. It will be equivalent to droppiing 15lb dbs, a lot less scarier.
U shoodnt drop because: 1)damage to floor 2)possible injury to bystanders and u.

Haha, it's embarassing that I have to kick my legs when trying to sit up with 150lbs on my chest. How about when they are on your chest, do you bring them down perpendicular to your body or parallel. Which is least likely to hurt my elbow?

just drop the weight down as close to possible to ur legs. So, basically, right on ur hips. From there, it's easy to pivot up (less leverage working against u) and slowly drop them on the floor.

oo leverage, that's some good thinking Gartrell! I'll try that out.
Jaster, I'm not sure what hooks you mean. Do you mean using cables or something? Or do you mean like those wrist bands so the weight can't be dropped? Sorry for not understanding, but I'd really appreciate any further clarification.
Thanks guys

I believe hooks clip on to the barbell overhead and allow you to hook the dumbell on it.

Oo that's cool. So you would bench where you normally do bench press, just with dumbells attached to the bar? That would work too. Now to decide which technique to use

Have you thought about using a smith machine to do barbell presses? The bar will stay straight no matter what then.

You're right that the barbell would be straight, however my concern is so much about keeping the weight balanced as it is about keeping my muscles balanced. My left side is weaker, so I will be using dumbells to try to balance out my muscles. Thanks for the advice though.
