i want to run a faster 40 yard dash and jump high

I am a 14 year old freshmen in high school, I play football,
I am 6'3 181 lbs.
I used to be kind of slow, but since practice i lowered my 40 yard dash to
5.0 seconds I want to eventually run in the 4.5-4.6 range; anybody know any routines to get you faster, also i was wondering if anybody knew anything about increasing your jumping or mobility.

Wear Keds.

Sorry, bad joke. Back in the day they used to advertise that you could run faster and jump higher if you wore their sneakers. Hmmm...come to think of it, not much different than todays commercials that use superstars to plug the product.

To answer your question, try a book called Daniels' Running Formula written by Jack Daniels. He was an Olympic medalist several years ago and more recently the track coach at SUNY Corland. There might be some help there for you,.

Search the forum for "Air Alert" ... it supposedly increases your vertical as well as decreasing your 40 time.

i don't really think its about what exersizes you do but how you do them. do them fast ane explosively, and thats how you'll run

I'd say a good 40 time is 4.6.

4.3=insane
4.4=incredible
4.5=fast
4.6=good

Practice practice practice

After that it's genetics.

Genetics is the final say.
Practice can bring you close but genetics says where your plateau is.

All that you need in regards to the methods are pretty simple.
Your current program given to you by your coach should suffice.
It's long term practice and genetics after that.

*game

please, i hate when people speak of genetics. i ahte when people speak of limitations in general. i wish people would stop thinking about limitations and begin thinking about they can improve upon where they are. even world-class bodybuilders with perfect genetics and a seemingly perfect body for their sport find they can improve so im sure anyone on this site can. limitations are mental, not physical

Plyometrics, plyometrics, and more plyometrics. Also, believe it or not, flexibility plays a huge role. The longer your stride, the faster you go. Don't buy into the BS that you shouldn't be flexible for certain sports. Barry Sanders could do the splits, was one of the fastest guys around, and you didn't see him on the sideline very often.

Limitations ...

Sure...even the ones with blessed genetics can improve.
What I'm saying is everyone has a limit.

If mother nature says you will never run a 40 in 4.3 then no amount of training will do it.

You could train day and night till you puke and then the guy with the genetics comes along and trains twice a week and runs a 4.2.

There are limitations and yeah...brains can overcome alot..but not genetics.

Sorry...that's the way the cookie crumbles.

there may be limits, but i don't honestly think that people usually reach their limit even when they think they are training best as possible

well boss there a couple things wrong with your stament, 1st, your inferring i don't have good genetics, which is wrong and 2nd i know white guys who run 4.3 and jump 42 inches in the air. anybody can run 4.5 if they work hard enough
maybe not everybody can run a 4.2 but people could get alot closer people who whine about genetics and all that **** aren't willing to go the extra mile

I agree here. We all have limits, but they're there to be pushed as far as we can. Can always blame stuff on genetics...but unless you're missing a leg or deformed somehow it doesn't really hold much water to me.

i think this is a pretty rediculous statement......

A) Unless youre buddies are all pro athletes or something you dont know anybody that runs a 4.3 and has a 42 inch vertical.

B) I think you might be under the impression that everybody is a great athlete. the best athlete at my school just barely clocks in at 4.5 and has a 33 inch vertical. hes getting a ride to the university of TN......so are you saying that everybody is capable of those stats and capable of going to UT on a full ride? i guarentee all levels of athletics would be about 10 fold more competitive if everybody had the ability to run a 4.5.

i think the thing you should have stressed in this post is POTENTIAL. everybody has the POTENTIAL to get bigger, faster, and stronger. however not everyone has the potential to run a 4.5

I think the jist of it was if you work hard enough then you can reach your goals. Unless you are at pro level you can't really blame much on genetics. You wont really know your potential until you push your limits. That doesn't mean everyone can be the best but I do believe if you work your ass off and do it right you can get pretty damn close.
