If it swells up and doesn't get better in a couple of days - see a doctor. If it hurts bad enough, see one sooner.

I dropped a 45 lb. plate on my toe a couple of months ago.

Chances are you'll loose the toe nail, it will be black and blue for a while, you'll limp for a while, and you'll need to cover the toe with gauze and tape it, changing it twice a day for a while.

I recovered and so will you. You'll be fine. One of many bumps that you will encounter along your fitness path.

yep - the nail's a goner. if the nail doesn't fall off by itself, you'll have to get it removed. this hurts like a bastiche, and that's no joke. do NOT let them put gauze directly onto the nailbed - it'll bond and it'll be screaming murder trying to remove the bandage down the road. it took my older daughter two hours of soaking and picking to get all of it off after she dropped a dining room table leg onto her big toe and the nail didn't fall off - just bonded down and began to grow in all kinds of crazy directions including INTO her toe.

another possibility is that the toe is broken - if the actual toe itself is bruised, that's probably what happened. don't bother going to the doctor, they can't do anything about it. all you can do is take it easy, no running, wear comfortable shoes, and wait.

yeah i know what it feels like to take off nails....

when i was small around 6-7, i was stepping into the house when my sister closed it in my face. It didnt hit my face but it did hit my toes. My dad took them of with pliers, i remeber everyone holding me down. It hurt like hell........
