I want to build a squat rack

I work out with free weights at home. NO GYM in this town. My weights are plastic and cement orbitron junk. I have taken them as far as I can go. I am buying a new olympic bench, olympic bar, and proper plates.

Now for the problem. To pick up the bar from the floor, put it on my shoulders and squat, I am not able to pick up enough weight to squat effectively with. I have some steel laying around this place. I was going to weld it up into a cage type squat rack. Does any one know how deep and how wide the thing should be, How tall should it be. Where should the rest for the bar be (how high)? Can I include a pull up bar on it without it being in the way and causing clumsy me to injure myself.

Sorry to ask this dumb question here, but I have searched and searched, I can find where to buy one at, but I cannot find measurements to build one of my own. If anyone knows the answers, Please tell me.

Thanks

Im in the same predicament as a_welch503, I need a squat rack and as I'm currently a student with no job, I have very little money and cant afford to splash the cash on all the extra equipment (or join a gym). So it really comes down to a money thing for me.

I wish I had the guts to make one, but I wouldnt know where to start.

Dimensions

Bones,

You said you could give the dimensions, that would be great. I will have to build one because I have the steel to build it with already and I cannot afford to buy one right now.

Thanks for your input.

squat rack

Not sure how handy you are, but if you have a basement with exposed joists you can build a squat rack pretty easily.

I carriage-bolted two 4x4s to the joists, then secured them to the concrete floor with L brackets. At squat height, I drilled 6-inch long, 1-inch-wide galvanized pipe into each 4x4. It's sturdy as heck and only cost a few bucks (plus labor, which you provide). Lowe's or Home Depot will cut your 4x4s to fit if you don't have a circular saw.

Sorry, don't have a pic, but I got the idea here:

Klinger, great article. Thanks for the link. I might have to build one in my basement! The alternative squat exercises might be helpful for some people as well.

Klinger,

I like the 4x4 idea. I was looing at a couple of the 4x4's that support my front porch yesterday wondering how to get the weight to stay on them. The one inch pipe sounds like it will do the trick quite well. Then I could use a longer piece of the pipe between the posts to make a Chin up bar instead of using the 2x10 joist that I use now.

I will probably end up building one out of steel before too long, but I will have to wait until the weather changes around here to do any welding, because I have to do all that kind of work out in the open. The 4x4 thing I will do tomorrow morning when I get home from work.

Thanks

Thanks for the idea and the link.
