I'm new...looking for advice, motivation

Hi, this is my first time here on this site. I'm 21 yrs old, 6'1, 185 lbs. I'm looking to cut my body fat fairly dramatically as well as get more definition (especially in my upper body). Any tips, workouts, advice. All I have available are some dumbells, a resistance band kit, and a medicine ball. Any words of encouragement would be appreciated.
thanks

Way to Go for taking the Initiative to Better Yourself! You'll be ripped and full of muscles in NO TIME with lots of Hard Work!

Main thing you can do is get set up with a good workout routine and pay CLOSE attention to your diet and you'll be good to go.

cheers

Aye imo diet is the most important factor. Many people make out these detailed workout scheduals and routines, and then leave thier diet to crap and wonder why they do not get results heh.

Here are some threads of interest:
Bodybuilders Grocery List
Building Mass while Losing Fat is a Myth!
Cutting Down FYI
Nutritional Values
Facts and Myths
Diet Advice (General Diet Tips)
Fast Food

That should be some to get you started. Always use search feature first if you have questions as it has prolly been asked before, but don't be afraid to ask if you cannot find anything.

Welcome to the boards!

Why is it that men usually post about how interested they are in bulking up,....and make special notes about how this interest is usually exclusively in relation to their upper body? ...and either no mention is made of legs, no interest is made of legs, or no questions are ASKED about legs?

Really guys,...... sincere...... why is that?

I made the same mistake when i first started training. Basically the guys that are ripped you tend to notice the six pack, broad shoulders, biceps etc etc etc and it's all the so called "beach" muscles.

Plus . . . . we tend to start with the areas that need to most work and since we typically don't pay much attention to back and legs or at least they are after thoughts, he focus on the "beach muscles" the same way some women obssese over their legs and buns.

At least my $.02

You know Merrida, I never realized that most guys ask the question that way until now.

I had always assumed bulking up meant the whole body (I have always thought that having a huge upper body with chicken legs was rediculous), but now that you mention it - that is a damn good question lol.

The reason that I am not concerned about my lower body is because I've played soccer my entire life and my lower body is in alot better condition than my upper body. My legs are strong and look good, my upper body has a nice layer of fat around it.

Thanks to everyone for all of the responses....i'm really impressed.

Medicine balls are good, when you purchased it, it should have came with an exercise manual. There are some good ones in there and you can make you own up as you go. With the dumbells you can do plenty
Flyers
incline d/b press
kickbacks
shoulder press (sit on medicine ball)
bicep curls
squats

Im no pro theres are just some off my head, it may help you or not.

When you see people who are nice and big with low bf% and nice abbs they have worked hard to be where they are. So what you gotta do man is work for it as well. Right down some goals and work out the price you got to pay to get what you want.
Its all between the ears
Good luck!

With DBs you can really get a very effective workout. I would first devise a split that you like. In other words bodyparts that you do on certain days. For example chest/triceps on the first day, back/biceps on the second, rest on the 3rd, and then delts/traps on the 4th, legs on the 5th, rest on the 6th and 7th.

Anyway here are some good exercises with DBs.

Chest- DB presses, DB flyes
Back- DB rows, incline DB rows
Triceps- seated DB extensions, lying DB ext.
Biceps- alt. DB curls, DB hammer curls
Delts- DB OH presses, DB laterals, bentover laterals
Traps- DB shrugs
Legs- DB squats, DB SLDLs
Calves- 1-leg DB calf raises

Good luck!
