I'm So Confused...

Can someone please explain this math to me.

"The Dietary Guidelines recommend that Americans limit fat in their diets to 30 percent of calories. This amounts to 53 grams of fat in a 1,600 calorie diet, 73 grams of fat in a 2,200 calorie diet, and 93 grams of fat in a 2,800 calorie diet.

My math says 30% of 1,600 is 480....30% of 2,200 is 660....30% of 2,800 is 840. I don't get it???

Are you mistaking calories for grams?

fat contains 9 cals/gram therefore 53 grams fat = 477 calories.
477/1600 x 100 = 30%

Thanks Brat...

Thanks Brat. I think I got it. If I take in 2350 calories then divide that by 9 = 261 and 30% of that is 78.3.

Not sure what you said but if you had

2350 calories and you hope you ate 30% of them as fat then

30/100 x 2350 = 705 calories would have been attributed to the fat in your diet. 705/9 = 78 grams in total.

Protein and carbohydrate each have 4 calories per gram not 9 like fat does.
