I had to do some formatting fixes for some reason. Did some mod accidently mess with my post? Anyways, if anyone finds any formatting errors can you please tell me for some reason a lot of " ' " and " - " were replaced by "?" and some spacing was off.

New to the fourm. Um I started lifting wieghts when I was 16, but I need to buy weights I can use at home. I was wondering if they are any store chains that sell weights (barbells, dumbells, etc.) BTW I live in Michigan.

I am a 33yo m 5'11'' 250lb (down from 260+ a month ago) I work 12hrs/day often 5-7 days in a row...desk job - VERY SEDENTARY... I am only able to workout B4 work...

Wake: 5-5:30am (edit 1/06 - I'm on duty 6a-6p now= workouts moved to evenings.)
@ Gym 6-6:15
Warm-up/ stretch: 15-20 min (should I do abs with warm up?)
Weight training: About 90min (I've been back in the gym for about 1mo after years of v. inconsistent/on-off-on-off type lifestyle) I'm just doing the circuit machines with all the old ladies to get the rust off, I'm planning on moving next week to hammer equip & free weights.
finish with about 20min cardio & get to work for 9am

I've made many changes to my diet, Man it's expensive to eat healthy!! I've cut out almost all fat/junk, I'm focusing on protein intake & carb control ( I think) Of course I have A LOT to learn about what is good & bad.
I've been trolling here & I like the support many of you offer and I look fwd to learning from some of you.

My first question is this... Should I eat a carb-ish breakfast when I wake up? I like oatmeal & I've incorporated 1cup servings 3-4x/wk, also I love grapefruit, and a bagel is another common choice(I laid off the cream cheese tho) Is 30-45min enough time to get the benefit of the carbs B4 a workout? or should I hit it in an empty stomach (No energy tho - right?)

I have a ton of questions, and I'm looking forward to the day I can post a photo to compete with MM... I enjoyed reading about your contest prep this year, congrats on your result. I'll be checking in often as a sit my broad parts at my desk job & pretend to have a clue!!

Glad to meet ya!

Some carbs to fire up the metabolism early in the day is a good idea. Some protein with it to support and help those muscles is a better idea.

Eating 30 - 45 minutes prior to working out is just fine. Myself, I eat breakfast, wait 30 minutes, take my GABA, wait 30 minutes, suck down a protein shake while walking out to the gym. Bust my butt for 20-40 minutes - then have a protein, dextrose, creatine shake immediately after. Then 30 minutes later comes a small protien, carb meal. Two hours after that is another small protien, carb meal.

That's just my way though. Read the nutrition, workout timing information. Find what seems to make the most sense for your body, give it a fair try - then adjust according to the results you are getting.

Thanks for such a quick response A W...

What's GABA?

I'm not ready/willing to get involved with alot of supplements yet, I think that is more advanced than I am at this point, but everything I read seems to say take this or that so i'm warming up to it, and as I progress I'm certain I'll try some products.

My train of thought at this point is I need to clean up my nutrition, so far seem to be off to a fair start, and just make the gym a part of my routine. Not so much about "do this exercise for X # of reps using a Mon/Wed/Fri split" tough to do with the crazy hours & long days
Once I get more adjusted to having fitness in my life, I figure about another month or two, then I should be in a better mental & physical place to establish a more productive workout. I'm already feeling the benefits of the time I've spent so far, and I'm trying to control my enthusiasm and not go a$$ over tea kettle into it & burn out or worse yet, INJURY!!
I'm going o take some pics this week(end) so I have a reference, I really enjoyed checking out everyone's progress photos. It has really inceased my motivation. (side note to curser - WOW!!)

GABA is one of the suppliments I use. If you are just now trying to get everything in order, no need to start using things like that right now. It's just a high dose amino acid that is used in the body as a neurotransmitter. Supposedly it increases GH production. I'm actually using it as part of my amino acid stack that I use for naturopathic treatment of MS. Happily for me, it also has an even better bodybuilding use. And you are right to ease into things. Pushing too far too fast is how most people that get hurt early then quit go wrong. I've done that a few times myself in the past and only started doing it right recently - about 2 years ago.

Can't gain weight...How can i gain muscle?

I'm 16 years old and I would like to know how I can gain weight...even if its not muscle...I just need to gain weight. I am a defenceman in hockey and i'm a pretty small guy for the job (5'10 150lbs). I'd really like to know how I can gain around 10-15 more pounds of muscle, or just mass. I went to Mexico this march break and it was all-inclusive....so I ate everything, not to mention a truck full of alcohol. I didn't gain a pound after eating everyday at least 6 times. I would really like to gain some mass but not too much becuase I'd like to still be lean and have the 6 pack for the ladies. I was just wondering if any of you expierenced muscle guys and girls had any info on how I could achieve my goal.

Thank you

You won't gain "10-15 more pounds of muscle" from increased eating alone. Do you do any weightlifting at all?
