Never heard this...

The absorption is based on the type of protein and its utilisation is down to the biological value (BV) of the nutrient

Whey/Isolate Protein should be digested in around 30mins
Caesin protein digests over a longer period

The 15mins therefore is arbitrary

Don't be so sure. The advice of many advanced bodybuilders on this forum in the past has been to sip on your protein shake for an hour, then have your first post-workout meal.

I'm just saying it does not add up...

Lets go back to the question of what the point of a post-workout shake is?

You body is screaming for leucine post-intense workout. If the shake is say 50g (yield) of protein and you take it over an hour, your body is getting 0.8g per min so for the first 20mins you are only getting 16.6g? Surely not enough in that time-scale after an intense workout...

If we are talking about load and utilisation again, surly 16.6g would be questionable

I would be interested in some info on how much the body can absorb and utilise in a given time period.

Seriously, I'm not saying I'm right.... I'm asking a question here!

Oh and mine is gone within 5mins.... :-)

I split my protein (50g) over a 15-20 minute period.

The main reason for me is because i add simple carbs I want a better control of the insulin levels.

I dont think it should matter, on average the levels of aa from whey take about an hour to peak and then another hour to reduce.
The question is the rate of utilisation of aas for protein and not energy by the tissues.

I'm not saying one way or the other because I'm not one who tries to optimize everything.

Half of mine is gone in about 15 seconds, then I take a shower, then the other half is gone in another 15 seconds. It's a time issue for me in the mornings. I don't have any time to waste. But then again, I'm not trying to optimize this thing either.

I'm a novice bodybuilder and I will never compete. I'm a general fitness type person so I don't really worry myself with these issues.

The only reason I mentioned the one hour thing is because a couple of years ago, there was a big post on that. Just thought I would mention it.

It tastes like ass. I hold my nose and chug it. Optimal? Probably not, but better than spewing it back up when trying to sip it.

why do you drink a protein brand that tastes so bad? I would never drink one that made me gag when there are so many out there that taste passable, if not good.

I don't like any of them. All food makes me gag because I haven't had any appetite for a long time.
