Schedule

Ok I have been training for about a month everyday - before this I kinda slacked off and maybe did it every 3 days for 6 months

How long should I wait to work the same mucle group? 48 hours? 24? more than 48?

and one more is it better to do 20 reps at once and fail or do 12 then 12 and fail?

If you want to push it to the next level and get advanced, I would say look into Max-OT---> http://www.ast-ss.com/max-ot/max-ot_intro.asp

No sense in doing 20 rep sets all the time or going to failure each time unless you're training for endurance. If you want to do bodybuilding or powerlifting or even strongman, gotta read up on a lot. This site has more than you'll need to know lol.

I'd say at least 3 days, but I usually hit each muscle group once a week.

I train full body 3 times a week, just two sets per exercise and never go to failure, I've tried other ways and this is what works best for me. I also mix it up with cardio and bodyweight exercises but this goes against the grain with accepted dogma

There's lots of different ways of training though. You could train each body part once a week and do more sets or do less sets and train more often. The rep scheme can also dictate your recovery time. Someone doing 5 X 5 will usually wait longer before doing the same exercise than someone doing 3 X 8 or 3 X 10

Why not read the max ot pdf, it's not my cup of tea but it explains everything clearly and lots of people enjoy it.

Depends completely on your level of intensity. Are you going to failure? On all sets? What is the volume of your workout? How long does your DOMS last? Also, are you eating properly to support your training? Any supplementation? These are all factors when determining recovery.

I let my body (and schedule) dictate just how much I can do in as short amount of time as possible. Right now, I train each muscle group once every 5-6 days.
