Squat VS Leg Press

I was at a gym for the first time while I was on vaction and I got to do leg presses. And it started me thinking about something, because I felt that I got a much more focused lift while I was doing that as opposed to squats where I feel less comfortable. So which exercise do you think is better for building good legs the Squat or Leg Press?

squats w/o a doubt. leg press is good to finish off with, but can't hold a candle to overal body/leg development

Squats. Front and back. Nothing comes close.

I have to agree w/ these 2. I can't do squats anymore cause of my back, and I know leg presses are no substitute.

Adam, it may just be the TYPE of squat you're doing, your form, using too much weight, or the technique.

I have a "bad back" as well, but squats (modified) feel good. I can't lift as heavy as I'd like, and I have to really concentrate to flex through the movement, using my body instead of just piling on the poundage, but the squat is probably the most natural movement of the human body, and one that strengthens then entire body.

I understand working around it, believe me. It sucks.

I don't do more than 6-8 squats at a time. You may find that you CAN squat, maybe lighter weight more reps, maybe you can work up to heavy weight but very few reps.... I avoided them too for the same reason until I figured out how to incorporate them.

Technique is everything.

I've seen people do dangerous looking squats, even for a healthy back.

Ever try them with seriously light weight?

Sometimes even in physical therapy they'll encorporate modified squatting to engage your CNS and entire muscular system for balance.

More often than not it's refining/modifying the form, and not trying to just duplicate what you were accustomed to.

May want to talk to your doc or a PT about it.

If all else fails, yeah, leg presses feel good and you can do them to "feel" like a squat too, just by focusing.

Yes, undoubtedly the squat..
Adam, Merrida is right again, if you have probs with your back the squat may be able to help. Just make sure that your hips dont roll under at the bottom of the squat. ie; the natural lumbar curve is maintained. Personally, I'm not a great fan of the squat because they are sooo bloody hard , but Í do them 4-5 out of 6 leg sessions because I consider em that important. Dont know about talking to a personal trainer tho, most of em at my gym dont know how even tho they have letters after their names!

I don't care too much for squats. I'm more of a glute squatter than a quad squatter so my back end gets too much stimulation from them. I like the results I get from leg presses.

I agree with Iron here..IMO legpresses target just that...the legs. My ass and my back hurts too much from squats.

Leg Presses are a great excercise but they are not in the same league as squats when it comes to overall development, and influence over natural GH and test levels, it is the ultimate compound excercise.

It's not meant to be comfortable, but it gets results.

Squats!! I recently hurt my back on a stupid leg press machine I had never used. It is made by stair master, it has a scissor action where the back rest moves as well as the foot plate. Put all the stress on lower back. If done correct with he right weight, squats rule.

As for how the squat works the leg/hams/glutes/quads, it's all the foot placement. Place your feet close together and you involve the quads more, the more you move them out the more the hams and glutes are involved.

OK so basically leg press is good to use in addition to squats, but not as a replacement. I can deal with that. Thanks guys you all had some really inturesting points.

I start off doing 3 sets of squats with semi-heavy weight, then take it to the max on leg presses. Personally I get much better results from going heavy and doing a lot of sets on leg press as opposed to doing just squats.
