Started talking Protien and now seeing nice gains. My imagination?

I have lifted for about 6 1/2 months and for about the first 6 months I never took any supplements. The last 2-3 weeks I've started taking about 75g of protein a day. Since i've started taking it, I look bigger and more defined. 2-3 is not much to notice improvements, so I am wondering if it's my imagination or if taking protein will give noticable effects this quickly? - Tom

I don't have a particularily good weight lifting diet, as I eat as much as possible to try and gain weight. But I eat semi-healthy food, mainly staying away from sugars & junk food.

Semi-healthy? I guess you'll see semi-gains. What I am finding out is this the old saying "You are what you eat" is very, very true. Since finding this site restructuring my diet and workouts I've been able to loose more BF and keep my muscle gains.

No, we all can't eat perfect all the time, but the effort needs to be made. But I see you are in the right direction by advoiding sugars & junk food, which I'll take it you mean candy and regular soda. How about fast food? Do you advoid that junk? I hope so a big mac can really screw you up!

75 grams of additional protein will make a big difference to most physiques especially if your diet is "semi-healthly" and "not particularily good".

Protein is the most important supplement you can take.

'Nuff Said.

The tuna reccomendation would normally be on point, but recently the FDA has reccomended that people limit their tuna intake to 1 can per week because the elevated levels of mercury found in the fish due to polution (us you can blame mankind for this one).

Doesn't that depend on the type of tuna? I might be mistaken but I thought it was albacore tuna that had the problem.

haha,

Well I guess Im a dead man considering I eat about 25-30 cans of tuna a week sometimes. If it was that much of a health risk, they would not even allow the sale of canned tuna. So im skeptical.

You have too much faith in your government's ability to protect you from every possible danger. Many hazaards are safe in moderation but become deadly at higher amounts. Like you're probably ok if you drink one thermometer in your life (old mercury one), but if you get into the habit of having a thermometer with every meal, you're in for a world of hurt. (yes, I know that eating tuna is far less extreme than drinking your thermometer. I just like saying "drinking a thermometer")

A little article on mercury in fish:

http://www.detnews.com/2004/health/0...alth-97811.htm

They say albacore has more mercury than canned light tuna. Also, the mercury exposure was most dangerous to pregnant women (specifically, their unborn child) and small children.

Indeed...moderation is key but here we are talking about adding 2-3 cans of tuna each day to a diet.

I would err on the side of moderation and find other sources of protein to throw in the mix (which is recommended anyways)

Firehawk if you believe eating 2-3 cans of tuna everyday is moderate tuna intake, then I cannot debate this point any longer with you.

Half of your diet isn't necessarily moderate. Try eating more eggs, beef, and chicken. None of those are particularly expensive if you know where to get them and have the time to cook it (steak can take like 20 minutes...chicken an hour...I usually cook a buttload of either at once so I can save it for later.)

2-3 cans is not half my diet cort. Maybe half my protein, but not half my diet.

I dont think 2-3 cans a day for a week at a time is excessive at all. Its easy to carry with you, its quick, and simple. Believe me, i eat plenty of chicken and eggs, and steak. And sometimes hamburger.
