Suggestions for a routine, help requested

Hello all,

I have several questions I would like to pose so please bear with me as I am realatively new to the board. I do want to say that from what I have seen so far, I am EXTREMEMLY impressed by the quality of this board and it's posters. Most posts are well prepared and the responses are equally so. Special thanks to both CURSOR and JOCK who have both contributed helpful responses to questoins I have. It is greatly appreciated.

It is my belief that eduated training is the best training, which has led me to this board. I want to start by stating my fitness goals so a routine to reach them can be developed. However, a baseline as to where I am at now is relevant and I think will help any who may lend some advice. I am 5'8", 140 and have been working out for over 5 years. I am in decent shape but I would really like to add about 10-15 pounds of muscle while at the same time really "ripping" up my stomach. My current bodyfat is approximately 10%. I would probably say that I value "rippin up" my stomach up a bit more that gettin bigger. I have always desired a "six pack" and am currently quite close to one, even to the point I can see some of the upper abs. But hopefully through a differnt/modified routine, my abs can reach a previously unattained level.

Here is my current routine...I currently run 3 days a week for approximately 20-25 minuets. I also lift 2-3 days a week, with around two upper body workouts and one lower body workout a week. I have only recently begund the lower body workouts. As for my diet, I eat pretty well, however, I don't think I can be a "slave" to some of the strict diets I have seen posted on here. I know myself and will not be able to do that. My biggest downfall I think lies in my love of carbs. While I have cut down alot over the last few weeks, I can't just not eat them, I like them too much!!!

These are some specific workout routine questions I have that are pertinant to the goals I stated above. I will break it down into cardio and lifting. In regards to the cardio, I think I am going to switch to the "Guerrilla Cardio" program Jock has spoke/posted on. Is the genearl opinion that such a routine would be conistant with my goals? This seems like the best way to work on my stomach. Any advice would be appreciated. Now for my lifting routine. I will say my time is limited with my job. I saw a nice post by CURSOR regarding 3,4, and 5 day splits and was thinking of following his 3 day split. I am also thinking of doing the exact same exercies he has listed. Is the general opinion that such a workout would help me add the 10-15 pounds of muscle I desire? Or would I need to lift more than that? I need to state that while I have noticed a change in my body recetnly in terms of having more muscle (I have increased intensity a bit the last month or so), I haven't gained a pound in months. I look bigger and better but have not added any wieght. I think alot has to do with sort of a paradox I am in. I don't want to eat alot becaue I want a better stomach, but I want to get bigger but can't because I may not be eating enough. I would say my caloric intake a day is around 1500-2000. Any advice pertinant would be greatly appreciated. The only supplement I take is a Whey Proteing shake after I lift.

Thanks to all who took the time to ready this small novel and even more so that can share some advice. I know I put a lot of info in the post so feel free to comment on any part of it, all info in my opinion is helpul. Afterall, knowledge is power and the best training is educated training. Thanks again to all for making these boards very educational. Take care.

Hi OS-

If you want to get ripped, you'll need to decrease your cals below maintenance levels somewhat and maintain or increase your activity level. Say bye-bye to some of those carbs!!

Log your daily calories for a few weeks and find out what your true metabolic/caloric needs are. Once you know that, it's simply a matter of adding small amounts of cals beyond your maintenece level to put on some muscle without gaining too much flab. Add too many cals/day and you'll get fat fast.

workout

Well both posts are correct..carbs kinda gotta go, least after bout 1pm...geurilla cardio is a great thing, or so ive heard, i have only completed two workouts so not much here yet...if u arent gonna elimiate any carbs...laest take out the sugar...i currently am cutting up too, im about 5'11 180 with about 9%bf so im tryin to get a lil lower myself...unfortunately for u...ur tryin to cut and add lean muscle mass at the same time...this, for most people is very very difficult, and i think most people on the board will agree...w/out steroids this is nearly impossible except genetically gifted people...well u sorta gotta choose...i cycle my program...i cut up for summer, but in the fall i bulk up, and just take the fat that comes...fat also brings muscle...but since ur cutting here is wut i am trying....mwf lift..heavy heavy weights..with this split
m - chest tric shoulders
w - back bic abs
f - legs abs
on t th sat, i wake up go to the track, and do geurrilla cardio, which kicks my ass by the way...i eat healthy throughout the day, eliminating most if not all carbs after 1pm...and ill keep this up until im a little more cut...well gl
