Sweating It Off
Okay this is somethign that I have wonered about for a long time. When a fighter/wrestler works out in sweatsuits not to cut weight but they work out in them to burn fat I think. The same thing as sitting in the Sauna. When you get out of the Sauna and rehydrate yourself (drink water or whatever) aren't you gaining that weight right back. If so why would you waste your time in the Sauna.

When I sauna, it's not with the intent of sweating off the fat ... 'cause it just doesn't work that way.

IF... you were doing that to burn FAT, then drinking water wouldn't gain it all back. However, if one gains it all back just by drinking water- then that clearly shows that the weight lost was no fat, but instead water. Some wrestlers will actually dehydrate themselves a lot using techniques you mentioned so that they can get into a lower weight class- not very healthy IMO.
There are, as Cursor mentioned, other benefits to the sauna.

If you happened to watch the UFC's reality show (season one), there was a fighter who had to lose 20 lbs over night in order to meet weight for the weigh in. He did it. After the weigh in, he drank it right back.

Wow ... talk about unhealthy! I wonder what the real risks of such drastic dehydration are.

Boby Southworth. Either he did it, or for some reason, they faked the whole thing. I can't think of any reason to fake it. It may have been an exaggeration. Maybe he lost 17 or 18 pounds, and they rounded up?

Whether the numbers were fudged or not, Joe "Diesel" Riggs before the most recent UFC event (which I watched, AWESOME! No more Couture though ) weighed in at made his weigh-in at 170 pounds. 36 hours later he was a said to weight 202! The only reason this is even slightly believable to me is because this 170 weight class fighter used to fight in the super heavyweights (300+). He's about the biggest, most solid 170 I've ever seen.

Symptoms of early or mild dehydration include: - flushed face
- extreme thirst, more than normal or unable to drink
- dry, warm skin
- cannot pass urine or reduced amounts, dark, yellow
- dizziness made worse when you are standing
- weakness
- cramping in the arms and legs
- crying with few or no tears
- sleepy or irritable
- unwell
- headaches
- dry mouth, dry tongue; with thick saliva.
Symptoms of moderate to severe dehydration include: - low blood pressure
- fainting
- severe muscle contractions in the arms, legs, stomach, and back
- convulsions
- a bloated stomach
- heart failure
- sunken fontanelle - soft spot on a infants head
- sunken dry eyes, with few or no tears
- skin loses its firmness and looks wrinkled
- lack of elasticity of the skin (when a bit of skin lifted up stays folded and takes a long time to go back to its normal position)
- rapid and deep breathing - faster than normal
- fast, weak pulse
In severe dehydration, these effects become more pronounced and the patient may develop evidence of hypovolaemic shock, including: diminished consciousness, lack of urine output, cool moist extremities, a rapid and feeble pulse (the radial pulse may be undetectable), low or undetectable blood pressure, and peripheral cyanosis. Death follows soon if rehydration is not started quickly.
