Tips on Swimming

does anyone have tips which will help me swim properly. Everytime i go to the swimming pool i am always standing in teh corner, or holding my berath underwater. I never actually swim from one side to another. Does anyone have any tips or tricks or something htat will help me swim.

the trick is to keep moving, keep breathing, and don't stop until you get to the other side.

it's harder than it seems.

You really can't teach someone how to swim properly over a massage board. But if I were to give you some tips it would be (assuming you're swimming front crawl; i'd need about 10 pages to explain all the strokes):

1) keep you head under water as much as possible, rotate to breath under your arm. Keep one ear in the water when you do this.
2) Use your legs, but kick from the hips not the knees. Splashing is just wasted effort.
3) Try not to look straight ahead under water; look down as much as possible (lowers drag).
4) Don't just throw your arms in the water, bend them at the elbow.
5) Rotate wrists so that your hands slice into the water like a knife.

There are a lot more things i could think of, but that should get you a decent front crawl. Wow, my 4 years of college swimming was actually put to use.

Yea its alot harder than it looks. Ok well just remember this principal, if you have air in your lungs you will float .. Ok .. so.. hmm. Well just try to float on your stomach and have the rest of your body paralled to the water, then kick your legs, and swing your arms The legs will keep you moving and your arms will tread the water.

the backstroke is a LOT easier to learn because there's no problem with breathing: float on your back, kick with your legs, then bring your arms straight up and over behind your head, like the wheel on a paddle boat. don't just flail them up and over, keep your arms straight and reach for farther water - as your arm scoops under the water, you'll be pulled forward.

just watch your head.

Take a few swimming lessons so you don't learn bad form or get hurt.... some people end up with strained necks, poor form, bad habits, inadequate or ineffecient swimming techniques.....plunk a few bucks out and take lessons.

Go to the local YMCA....sometimes you can get lessons for free.

I was born in the water and am what's called a water baby, and I've been swimming all my life. But I must reinforce the varieties that exist out there re: the "how to's" in this!

Get over yourself. Take a few lessons, learn to do it the right way. Of course the other option is....sinking. Or flayling about randomly....that's even more embarassing....eh?
