Training a beginner...can I make run harder for me

I have recently started helping a friend of mine get into shape. We go on runs but they run VERY slow and not very far. I am super busy with school and usually run a good run before going to run with them so that I can get a work out in also. Well, now I am getting busier and can only go once a day. I cant just blow my friend off and not run with them but I am not getting much of a work out running 1 to 1.5 miles at a very slow pace. I can walk briskly and move as fast as them. At the end of the work out I dont feel that my heart rate has been raised much, I am not tired, and I can breathe very easily. I dont feel as if I am getting much of a work out. Are there any ways to make this run a little tougher on me? Besides zig-zaging across the street behind them? Thanks

Chris

Explain the situation - I'm sure your friends will understand. Instead of running with them everyday, do every second day and use them as your easy runs and do the higher intensity stuff on your own. In time your friends should build up their own fitness -just make sure to push them on and be enthusiastic.
