When people talk about building a solid core they mean you lower torso, so your abs and your obliques and your lower back. When lifting heavy weights or any weights at all you your core has to be able to support the body. Think about doing rows, you have to keep your body upright to perform and exercise to work your back. Your lower back is responible for keeping your body straight. If you find your lower back or your abs hurt alot while in the gym that generally means you don't have a solid core. Do a good ab workout, some back extensions, light deadlifts.

Core exercises for your core muscles are bench press, shoulder press, upright rows, squats, lunges, deadlifts, and abs.

The core is any posterior muscle + your abs. Hamstrings, hips, glutes, lower back, middle and upper back.

Squats, Deadlifts, Glute/Ham Raises, Good Mornings, SLDL's, anything that focuses on the mid area of your body and strengthening that part is a good core exercise.

It is CRUCIAL to have a strong core. It will protect you from injuries and make you a better lifter in the long run. Too many people refuse to train the core because to train your core requires intensity and it requires heavy work. You can't train your core being a bench whore all your life.

a significant number of chronic lower back pains and lower back injuries are caused by weak abdominals - the gut just sags in front forcing the back to take teh whole load instead of assisting the back like it's supposed to. if your core is weak, your squats, deadlifts, even twiddly exercises like leg presses and such will be limited and so will your progress. your body isn't a series of isolated muscles - each and every muscle is part of a group that acts like a link in a chain. you know the saying: you're only as strong as your weakest link.
