what is wrong with my knee?

so about a month ago, while walking around in new york city, my inner knee starts to ache really bad. i thought it was just from walking around alot. a few days later, while playing basketball, i noticed for the first time that the same knee did not feel as strong as the other one. for the next week, my knee didn't hurt, but felt uncomfortable at times. i continued my workouts with no problem. then one night after a leg workout, my knee started to hurt alot and i was in pain during that night. for the next week, everyday i would wake up, and it would be fine, but it turned out that if i spent any considerable amount of time on my feet, it would ache again on the kneecap and inner knee and it would hurt enough that i would have to limp. i went to the doctor and he took xrays and didnt find anything wrong with it and cleared me to resume lifting. problem is, my knee is nowhere near ready for me to resume. it has gotten better in the past week, im not really aching anymore, but it still feels unstable. im scared to go back to the gym, cause i dont want to make it worse, but i feel there might be something wrong with it that the doctor didnt diagnose. i have been squatting 300lbs the past couple weeks before it started hurting. can anyone tell me whats wrong with my knee?

could be something else affecting it... I have high arches which make my feet roll in, and it has in the past caused my knee to be sore when squating without good shoe supports. When you stand up straight in bare feet hows the alignment of you ankles. get someone to have a look from the back.

You need to see an orthopedist, preferably someone experienced in sports-related injury. X-rays don't show even half of what is needed to make a diagnosis here. See a specialist - it's really worth the trouble.

I'm with CJNY- go see a professional who knows more than your doctor about sport specific injuries. There are orthopedists who specialize in the knee joint- do try to find one ASAP.

On the other side of the coin... are you doing any variations of the squat (wide stance, narrow stance, etc)? If not, think about it when you resume training, as the legs are not comprised of the quads alone, and strength imbalances can cause pain over time if not corrected. Think about your adductor and hamstring training, as well.

Chondromalacia patella, a name not in favor any longer for roughening of the cartilage found underneath the kneecap and associated pain. One treatment that has been used is to literally scrape the underside of the kneecap to smooth it out. The only guy I know who had this treatment done described it as one of the worst mistakes he ever made.

I am somewhat familiar with this ailment , It doesn't sound to me like that's the problem here, but you never know.

I would still go see an orthopedic specialists. It sounds like you may have a strained Anterial Cruciate Ligament-ACL or MCL -Medial Cruciate Ligament. If it were torn, it would swell and you couldn't put heavy weight on it.

My advise is to stop squats for awhile, Rule of thumb on squats...Don't do them with knee and back pain/problems, if you continue to do so, it could lead to serious problems.
