Which form of cardio is better??!?

I was wanting to get everyone's opionon on what type of carido would be best to lose body fat, but not burn up any muscle. I was doing long distance runs until I hurt my calf and after some thinking I figured that 3-5 mile runs may be catabolic for my muscles. I have thought about doing some HITT. What type of cardio would you suggest so I can perserve hard earned muscle?

---Thanks!

Hiit or moderate cardio at ~65-75% your max heartrate. Long distance running at a high heartrate does have that tendency to burn muscle, though with proper nutrition, you shouldn't have much to worry about with any choice barring a marathon.

I never really understood the whole point of running long distance / endurance training. Isn't that why we invented planes, trains and automobiles?

I simply get bored with longer cardio sessions. If HIIT can provide better results in a fraction of the time....

If you want to train for long distance running (endurance), and you enjoy it, then go for it. If you're after fat-loss, then responsible interval sessions (coupled with guarded nutrition) will do the trick.

I don't wanna rehash the whole debate, so I'll just leave it at the fact that "better" results is a relative term. Someone at a low bodyfat trying to gain mass but minimize fat would probably be more effective with the moderate cardio. I definitely agree, though, that HIIT is the best for pure calorie deficit and effeciency. It worked wonders for me when I did my first cut.

Would the moderate cardio be better because there's less chance of it eating into muscle stores?

I'm currently doing a mixture of HIIT and moderate cardio (25-30 min, medium intensity). But then again, I'm working more towards a specific test goal rather than fat loss.

Well, basically, it would burn a higher percentage of calories from fat, rather than muscle or glycogen stores. I don't want to just be burning the higher number of carbs I'm taking in when adding mass, just shaving off some fat.

HIIT = High Intensity Interval Training

It consists of short bursts of intense cardio work, followed by short moderate cardio segments. Cycling intense then moderate serveral times stresses the body adequately to promise quality fat-loss (when coupled with quality eating habits, of course).

What is HIIT?
HIIT components
Stair HIIT
8-minute HIIT routine
HITT is great for fat-loss
Fat burning zone vs. HIIT
Guerilla Cardio
Forget the Fat-Burn Zone
Why HIIT?
Help with HIIT cardio

So is it a good idea to do cardio on a lifting day if you want to get maximum muscle gains? If it isn't what do you do about splits when you lift say 4 or 5 times a week.
