alcohol minimizing downsides

I drink fairly heavily once or twice a week, besides water before bed any other ways to minimize all the negative effects of alcohol on your body. A friend of mine takes Aleve when she starts drinking, is this dangerous? Benifitial?

Well, I think you know as well as I do there is nothing healthy about drinking - esp. binge drinking... but... I do it too sometimes.

I just drink plenty of water during the day and esp right before I go to bed. Also, popping some kind of aleve or something always helps with the headache if you do it right before you go to bed.

LOL - I put the water and asprin out before I even leave to go out...

No point drinking plain water after a drinking session. You need something isotonic to replace the lost salts.

I would be careful with that combination (asprin and alcohol). I had a coworker whose best friend died after a heavy night of drinking and then taking asprin before he went to bed. I'm not sure of the rest of the circumstances behind it but it scared the coworker to become a non-drinker.

I'll tell you, I lift weights about 5 days a week and drink pretty heavy the other 2 days. Definitley one of the best things I have found to do before sleeping is I drink 2 bottles of gatorade right before I used to sleep, and I wake up feeling golden. If I can stomach it I my drink 3. I also usually down a nice plate of wings with it. I also used to take Excedrine Migraine until I read about the dangers of mixing alcohol, acetamenophin and aspirin, so I stopped. Try Motrin.

Also eating a meal with a bit of fatty content before you start drink helps.
Like for me I like to get a Whopper or Angus Burger from Burger King with some fries before I start. Now of course is setting me up for a little fat gain but I am very strict about my diet excercise throughout the week so it has blanced out quite nice.
I also read an article about eating restrictive during the week, and doubling calories on the weekend can actually help you add lean mass with minimal bodyfat, and it has worked so far.

You may be able to minimize some of the hangover effects with some of the suggestions listed here, but that isn't going to keep you from damaging your liver, stomach, brain, heart, etc. Binge drinking can't be done safely.

I drink some water and take some milk thistle before I go to sleep, if I can remember too. This helps to chelate some of the toxins floating around the bloodstream due to the alcohol. My problem is I dont feel like drinking water or anything after a heavy night drinking unless I want to get sick.

This might sound completely stupid, but this is how I combat hangovers, the worst I get is tiredness (but I don't get the 'run over by a bus' feeling I'm famous for getting). A couple of 2.25 litre Diet Cokes beside the bed. I down a heap before I go to sleep, and the caffeine in it keeps me in and out of proper sleep, so when I'm half dozed and wake up I keep chugging it down.

Aside from the caffeine, I'm also waking up to go to the bathroom, so between both of those it keeps me awake at parts of the night to drop more fluid in, and flush all the bad stuff out. Admittedly it's not the best fluid for a hangover cure, but all I need by the time I'd usually wake up is another piss, a couple more hours sleep, and I'm rosey.

I still haven't found anything you can take to erase the stupid things you did the night before though..

I couldn't resist searching online to see if Gatorade is being promoted anywhere as a mixer - sure enough it is. Here are some drink recipes
