Eat until your hunger goes away. Portion size is the key to the better way to deal with that kind of situation.

In my opinion, it is NEVER appropriate to skip a meal.
Life happens. If life happens to be a meatlovers from pizza hut, so be it.
Just go for a run later and burn it off.

From what I've learned from these boards, skipping a meal is not the way to go. I just suggest that you eat something else less fattining, if you can't do that, then just eat less pizza than you usually eat. If you usually eat four pieces, try to only eat two.

As Brat said, portion sizes are key... Ask for the nutritional information then make an informed decision at how much you can eat. Failing that, quit as you start to feel full!

You should eat when you're hungry. I believe most people really don't know what true hunger feels like. We know when we need to breathe, we know when we're thirsty, but that hunger drive doesn't seem to work at all.. or does it actually work fairly well and we just habituate ourselves to eat at predetermined times whether we're hungry or not. A baby knows when it needs mother's milk. Little children know when they're hungy - but we do our best to get them to eat food even if they're not.
As for the meatlovers pizza - gimme a break. This is not health food.

The question was, I believe, "bad food or no food?" for a meal when one needs to eat. Sure, for longevity and excellent health into old age it would probably be best to skip the meatlovers pizza and some research has shown (don't ask for it, I just remember it from one too many nights spent with the discovery channel) that being slightly underfed is better. However for bodybuilding, powerlifting, endurance sports, or the most common "fitness" things - yes, bad food for one meal is better than no food.

You beat me to the punch Mr. Welch and I couldn't have said it better myself.
There are several factors to consider in this scenario.
You're hungry and need to eat. Pizza, not by choice, is your only option. So what do you do?
First of all, are you bulking or cutting or neither?
What time of day is it? In other words, will you have time to work it off or are we talking about right before bedtime?
Are you one of those who will eat healthy 100% of the time or would you consider the pizza your cheat meal?
If you like pizza, you do NOT have to deprive yourself. Just schedule a workout to burn it off.
Not everyone is into this lifestyle for 100% maxes and gains or deprivation. I love pizza myself and I no longer choose to deprive myself of it. I'm smart enough, however, to know I can't eat it every day. But I will schedule a workout if I don't already have one scheduled to burn it off.
Also, the question was not about knowing when you're hungry. I think it was assumed in this question that you're hungry, hence, mealtime.

The original post raises a couple fundamental questions:
1. When to have a meal
2. What to have for a meal
I'm occasionally faced with these choices when attending business functions at my 'normal' meal time (business breakfast, luncheon or dinner meeting, office gathering, etc.) where I have no control over what's being served - and there is nothing available that is vegan.
I know the feeling of REAL hunger from fasting for a few days - and my desire to eat something around noon each day isn't it. So I simply skip the meal. If I have some advance notice, I make a special request or if that's not appropriate, I eat something a little earlier or later that is healthy. Under normal circumstances there's absolutely no excuse for eating unhealthy (bad) food.
You can probably guess that I don't buy into the 'cheat meal' philosophy either. That's like having a pack of cigarettes once a week instead of daily.
No meal is better than a bad meal.

We will have to agree to disagree on that one.
It really depends on what a person's goals are and how dedicated they are to the lifestyle.
"No meal is better than a bad meal" is a blanket statement that simply will not apply to everyone.
Like I said, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Depends on the lifestyle. Vegan's lifestyle requires great dedication and in her (I think, my apologies if wrong) particular case, no meal is better.
For those of us with a different lifestyle with different goals, then the bad meal is better.
Kind of like a discussion I had with Todd once about nutrition timing. For me while losing my weight, having a meal late wasn't a problem as long as I didn't go more than 6 hours without eating. 4 was better though. Then when I lost the fat and couldn't gain, he explained in a way that sunk through to me that eating too soon was better than eating too late - even 30 minutes too late is bad...for optimum muscle growth. So too early may cause a tiny bit of fat storage, but in the grand scheme of a year's bulking a few early meals don't do much damage...a few late ones would. I finally managed to grow a bit after he patiently explained it to me a dozen different ways.
Just depends on the lifestyle one leads and what their goals are.

I certainly hope there are not surgeons out there who buy into the no meal is better than anything philosophy. Image if you were the second person in line and the first surgery was running overtime and the doctor decided to skip lunch to stay on schedule.
Would you want someone to operate on you with a foggy brain due because they decided to just fast ?
No feed your brain and don't be stupid obsessing about one meal of limited choices. Your boss and your loved ones will thank you.
