Booze inhibits muscle growth.

from physical magazine pg 24 june 2005 issue. (the free version from GNC)

YOUR COURAGE MAY GROW AFTER A few drinks, but apparently your muscles dont. Scientists from Penn State University have determined that alcohol ingestion not only impairs muscle-protein synthesis, but also blunts the anabolic effects of amino acids, insulin and |GF-1. In a series of elegant studies on rodents and incubated human muscle cell, alcohol administration was found to impart several of the key myogenic regulatory factors taht work at the RNA level to increase protein synthesis.

explains the classic boozer's shape: twiggy, scrawny limbs, xylophone ribcage, and a pot belly.

Man, that's not good at all... although IF it's true, that would partially explain why my shoulders and legs (Friday's split) haven't seemed to make proportional gains with everything else.
