Calculating carbs in a diet plan

So, I was going through past posts and it looks like I've been calculating my carbs incorrectly. There was a post that indicated you take a nutritional breakdown and subtract the grams of fiber from the grams of total carbs to get the applicable carbs for a diet plan. However, before I change every diet plan that I've been working on, I want to make sure this is accurate.

e.g. Fiber cereal has 24g carbs. 14g of which are fiber. Therefore I would only count 10g toward my daily carb total.

Please clarify the right way to calculate this. I'm fairly new to this but trying to learn quickly.

You shouldnt count fiber carbs as they do not provide ANY burnable fuel for your body. As Fudo once said "Unless you have 4 stomachs (Like a cow), do not count fiber" (Or something similar when i asked this same question)

This is exactly what I was talking about. I'm taking in a good percentage of "fiber" (at least 25g) and want to account for it correctly. I'm willing to pull them out, I just want to make sure that I'm not miscalculating my ratios.

The logic of pulling them out makes sense, as does Jock's comment of a carb is a carb.

Help...

I just read your second reply. This makes more sense. I'll read through this and see if I have any questions.

I know the feeling man - im taking in upwards of 70g of fiber a day (Which is almost 300 calories to count for).

It makes a big difference in calorie counting heh. Thats why I verified it a while ago because i didnt want to be overshooting.

70 extra calories a day, times 365 days a year = 7.3 lbs of fat.

Do you not need fiber on a daily basis to avoid constipation? Is Matamucil any good?

I prefer fiber from food sources. Its not hard to get if you eat the right stuff. Fruits, veggies and whole grain anything contain more fiber and protein then thier white counter parts.

Sprouted grain bread is the only kind of bread I eat and it is very high in fiber (9g per slice)

With increased (yes, daily) fiber intake, you'll want to make sure that your water uptake is up to snuff. You need to keep your digestive system working smoothly.
