Cleanse/Detox
I am considering doing a colon cleanse and or a detox of some sort. Does any have any ideas on how I would go about this? Are these even good for you? Any info would be appreciated.

I personally am not a believer in colon cleansing and detoxing. The best way to clean your colon is to eat plenty of fiber and drink lots of water.

yes they are very good for you....
FASTING! You just got to educate yourself thoroughly before doing a fast... it can last one day, several days or even weeks. Main thing is you should still consume a small amount of calories vitamins, minerals, protien a few times a day like via protienshake and vegetables n fruits in the juicer.

I did one a year or so ago and felt freaking great afterwards. I just take Psyllium Husk capsules every night which helps to keep me regular.

I tend to think the body, if left alone will detox itself. So... that being said, I started doing a 24 hour fast one day per week. So far so good... I mean I feel great! Just not sure how "cleansed" I am LOL! I figure it can't be bad for me since I am not doing it too long where significant muscle loss would occur.

I see nothing natural in forcing your body to eliminate what is in your intestines by force (chemicals). I use the high fiber diet approach and have no issues.
As far as detoxing goes, use a dry sauna it releases tons of impruities through your skin.

So it sounds like fasting may be the more natural alternative. Is this simply not eating for 24 hrs?
Westside-it looks like you have the most experience with fasting. What do you recommend?
Lady C-Do you take a fiber supplement like metemucil or do you just get it in your diet?
I guess my goal here is for a clean start. I was not aware of cleansing was a bad thing. I figured the build up would be something that we would want to get rid of.

I fast like this...
I eat breakfast my normal breakfast, then I do not eat again until the following days breakfast. I also make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

ick fasting is miserable, I only do it when necessary (tummy bug etc.)
I also don't think detox is necessary, just eat healthily, lots of fruit & veg and your system should 'cleanse' itself!
of course throwing some fasting in there probably won't hurt, it is a good mental exercise too.

What exactly is the "build up" you're looking to get rid of? What precisely needs to be cleansed?

According to the reading I have been doing-There is a lot of things that our bodies do not digest and just builds up over time. According to pro colon cleansing people you can not get rid of the stuff without doing an actual cleansing. By the way I am not an expert on this topic by any means, I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
Here is some info from one of many sites that I have found:
http://www.colonzone.org/colon-cleanse-intro.php
I am not sure if there are any Howard Stern fans here, but his sidekick Robin did this years ago and dropped quite a bit of weight and said she felt great afterwards.

All diet, no supplements. Start tracking you only need 30-40 grams fiber per day. It is easy to do with whole grains, beans and veggies.
And who is claiming or advertising that you are building up stuff? My guess it is a supplement company.

If you found your way into this site, you're probably suffering from some sort of ailment, whether it's constipation, acne, candida, brain fog, or just a constant feeling of sluggishness. Most likely, that ailment is related some way to the colon.
|
It always sends up red flags when a site is trying to sell you something, and also telling you that is a cure-all for many condiditons.

The truth is our colon, for most of us, is in an unhealthy state, filled with mucoid plaque, toxins, and a complete mess. Our colon is clogged, leading to constipation.
|
Our colons are not clogged up with mucus, toxins, wastes, etc. If your colon is truly clogged, you'll be in unbearable pain and in the hospital.
Here's Mayo Clinic's take on colon cleaning http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/col...ansing/AN00065
Sorry to be frank (I am not shy about expressing my opinions) but colon cleansing if more full of crap than my uncleansed colon.

I think "detoxing" is like fad dieting. It's better to have a healthy way of eating that works for your lifestyle. Eating (mostly) healthy as part of your lifestyle is so much better than any 3/5/7-day scheme.
I think the concept of the "detox" has been popularised to sell women's magazines and suppliments!
