Fowler points to a recent study in which feeding artificial sweeteners to rat pups made them crave more calories than animals fed real sugar. "If you offer your body something that tastes like a lot of calories, but it isn't there, your body is alerted to the possibility that there is something there and it will search for the calories promised but not delivered," Fowler says.
Perhaps......our bodies are smarter than we think.

I was going to be quick to point out that people probably think because they are drinking "diet" they can eat more. But this is a very interesting turn of events.

This idea could even be applies to artificial sweeteners in general, which is why tend to avoid them.

I think it is not an issue as there are plenty sweeteners that have 0,01 calories and such. if you get in 5 cals of that stuff - YOU EAT A LOT OF IT!

you're missing the point: the problem is that the sweetener is telling your body that you've eaten calories but when it goes looking, there's nothing there. it seems that what happens is it sends up a hunger signal that makes you eat more because it wants you to make up for false advertising.
read The Mad Hatter theory: alice in wonderland was upset because she wasn't offered any tea even though she didn't even want any tea. just to show him, she took tea, bread, and butter.

Personally I have yet to experience any hunger bouts after drinking/eating any artificial sweetners so I dont think im going to worry too much about this study.
if anything - drinking diet soda's make me full because of all the carbonation and I try to avoid it on my bulking diet as I already have enough trouble finding room to eat the meals im suppose to.
but everybody is different I guess, thats just me.

What _kind_ of black tea do you drink? I'll drink Earl Grey once in a while and really like. Its aroma is simply amazing- and all it is is flavored water!

earl grey is flavoured with oil of bergamot - i can't stand it, lol. to me, it smells and tastes like road dust.
i LOVE herb teas - try tea made with fresh chamomile or mint: you'll never used the dried stuff again. also, clover flower tea is wonderful stuff.
black tea wise, i prefer english breakfast or standard orange pekoe. i tried oolong once, but found it a tad strong. i drink a LOT of green tea.
herb teas straight are no problem, but black tea seems to really hit my gut hard without something in it.

It's probably nothing to worry about. Diet soda won't stop your fat loss.

So just use it with food and then something will be there?

How could you not like a lavender/citrus tea...? lol! jk...
I started drinking tea when my APUSH (AP United States History) group would meet at Starbucks- and I didn't want to buy cream and sugar laden coffee drinks. I got into the habit of buying tea- iced (unsweetened) tea, hot tea, etc... now I really like it!
I'll have to try more herbal tea, 3norns- what would you say is your favorite if you had to pick one?

without a doubt, it's rosehips and hibiscus. can't get it fresh, alas, living where i do, but it's packed to the walls with antioxidants, vitamin C, and other good stuff.
i also like blackcurrent-flavoured black tea, as well as any of the ones i mentioned before, but rosehips and hibiscus is my favourite.

Diet or no diet, it all comes down to self control. Personally I haven't noticed any extra cravings while drinking diet soda, but I never give in to cravings unless theres good looking women involved
