Fiddleheads - get your greens while you can!

If you can get these fresh in your supermarket then get them while they last. They are only in season now and are a great change from crucifers as greens.

Of course I love them steamed and buttered but they can also be made in a more diet friendly manner for those watching their heart and waistlines

Never heard of them.

How do they grow? In a big bundle like broccoli or separately like aspargus?

They are the curled tips of wild ferns. Only available fresh in the Spring in certain northern climates, but are sold frozen year round.

They are delicate in flavour like asparagus or artichoke, but have their own unique taste. Fresh they are simply a delicacy ( and cheap too)

My mom has them growing in her back yard. Wish this post was made about a week earlier when they were just starting to sprout!

Does she eat them?

Make sure they are the right kind of backyard ferns. Like wild mushrooms, some are toxic!
