Fish Oil


I am currently taking 1000mg of fish oil in the mornings with breakfast. But I was told this wasn't enough.
So should I take two a day? Three a day?

Minimum of 3 grams per day. I usually take mine with breakfast. (I don't like fish!)

You realize that to get that much EPA and DHA even from concentrated sources takes a whole lot of fish pills? A standard 180 and 120 split would mean you would have to take 15 pills a day.

yes I do, and 180/120 would be 20 to get 6 grams. 3-6 grams seems to be where most people find the most benefits, like less oily skin, improved mood, etc.

sams club has some that total 440 per cap I think, and they're uber cheap

How cheap is uber cheap? I currently pay 3.25 a bottle for 100 180 120 ratio capsules and i take 8 a day at most. I took 12 one time during wrestling season to help me lose weight.

Also, 6000/400 = 60/4 = 30/2 = 15 last time I checked

hm I want to say $7 or $8 for 200. maybe someone can confirm. where do you get yours?

but its 240/200 ratio

just so you can see im not throwing out numbers here, this paper states that at least 2.7 grams total is needed for benefits: "[..]Although modest increases in intake of n3 LC PUFAs can reduce cardiovascular risk, relatively large doses (≥ 2.7 g/day EPA plus DHA) are required for anti-inflammatory effects.[..]"

most studies seem to focus on around 6 grams for the mental benefits. I think it's safe to say start at 2 or 3 grams and if you experience no sides keep increasing until you notice positive benefits (they wont be immediate).

I would not take over 3.5- 4g a day 12-13 capsules. Extra benefit above this dose has not been shown and you risk the formation of glucose intolerance

Most of the caps I've seen are 1g each. So take 1 about 30 minutes after a meal three times a day. That should do it for you. Read the instructions on the bottle. That's how most of them are reccomended to be taken...or at least the ones I've seen in the stores.

thats one gram of oil, but you want to look at how many mg of EPA and DHA and total that up.

I'm just reading what it says to take on the bottle. I try not to go over reccomended amounts. I don't buy into the idea that if one is good three is better. If it reccomends TID, that's all I take.

there is usually a bell curve for everything, they have to be conservative on the labels

These are guidleines set for no specific reason taking into account a reasonable safe amount to supplement diet and that is practical as well.Your normal person will not take 12 capsules so there is no point in saying it. The pharmaceutical grades are in an oil and are moreconcentrated and recommend 2.5g a day EPA/DHA.
If you don not have glucose control problems you will need 3-4G EPA/DHA a day thats a standard 10-13 capsules for the benefits they offer.
