Fruit Diet?

Hi all,

I'd like to hear your thoughts on the 3 day fruit diet.

I'm 26 and my diet changes quite often. I love general fitness and a general diet, but it all go's wrong around twice a week because I like socialising with friends with involves drinking quite heavily which makes my fitness and weight go to pot.

My question is - is it healthy, to detox your body and lose a few pounds, to go on a 3 diet fruit diet, which basically consists of apples, banana's, grapes, grapefruit, smoothies and water?

I must admit I did this last week while I was on a gym and running regime and I felt great. But, again, because of a social event, the weekend consisted of a lot of alcohol which spoilt everything. I really need to stop the great nights out (if I had a girlfriend it would be easier) but I do enjoy the fun.

Your opinion or tips? What about 5 day fruit diets?

Many thanks all,
Richard

I'm no expert, but anything in excess seems to prove itself to be bad in the long run. Binge drinking and three days of fruit included.

Ok, what if I were to curb the mad nights out - but to detox the body, use the fruit diet for 3 days every so often?

Well- if all you eat it fruit, you'd probably have a calorie deficit. Think about it- it's really hard to eat 1500 calories of fruit! Especially if it's apples and fibrous fruits like berries.

I've heard something like this before- fruit is supposed to be very easy for your body to break down, so it would have benefits to your diet.

If I were ever to attempt something like this- I would add in cottage cheese at the very least. This would decrease the muscle loss.

However, whenever I've gone overboard in something- I like to excercise instead. I'll go for a 6 mile run two days in a row while keeping a balanced diet, and I find that really helps me. I think, in general, people exaggerate muscle lost due to cardio. If you're lifting, too, then your body is unlikely to shed muscle so easily than if you aren't. I know a friend of mine who, never having lifted weights extensively, maintained a squat of twice their body weight, and when they stopped playing soccer (mostly cardio), their squat decreased to just above their body weight. This tells me, that for that person at the very least, the soccer cardio was helping them maintain muscle.

Really, though. There's no need to go all out on a 3-day fruit diet. Just eat lots of green veggies, plenty of protein, whole grains, and quality fats, and you should be fine.

Just curb the mad nights out and incorporate fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet everyday. It's a lot better long term solution.
Just what benefits are you expecting to get from this?

It really depends on what kind of cardio but you can pretty much be 100% sure that any athletes with elite totals arnt running their asses off.

As I mentioned I did this last week and I felt great.

If you did it last week and felt great, don't do it too often, then do it again sometime. Hell, 3 days isn't going to hurt you even if it doesn't really detox you.

A better idea would be an immaculately clean diet, no alcohol, protien/carbs/fat in the proper ratio for your individual needs, plenty of fruits and green veggies every day. But hey, what's the fun in that? Good for the body though.
