Gas!

Okay, I have been reading about gas, what causes it, what may contribute to it.... and I'd still like to get some info..... more info about potentially what else can or might be causing this.

I've been taking a break from protein shakes, so we can eliminate (no pun) that avenue. (I know that can be a big trigger and is one of the primary ones on the list).

Also, for various reasons, I do not have a diet that is particularly rich in the vegetables and fruits usually cited as contributing to gas. Okay, so we rule that out too.

The only bread I eat would be 1/2 a wrap (for a turkey wrap)... I do eat oatmeal every day at least once (but again, that's a constant and usually in the morning)....my gas tends to be more uhm,......formidable....by the afternoon/evening.

(Gosh, isn't it amazing sometimes what the anonymity of the internet can contribute to the aspect of sharing information!)

Hmm, what else. A few times a week, maybe popcorn (but not much, and the gas has usually hit by that time already).

I have virtually NO gas in the morning and lunch time area,...it's most definitely a latter-day event.

But my questions would be,...what might contribute to this, being it isn't an always thing (which makes me rule out my every day staples) But maybe I should not count them out?

I also eat yogurt (plain low-fat or non-fat) every day.

I wondered about being lactose intolerant, - I've never quit yogurt long enough to know. And, it's my only source of dairy.

And what about the timing, the fact it's only in the afternoon/evening that it hits me. It's also presenting noticable distention of my abdomen. It all goes away by morning.

Any thoughts?

Merrida,

First, no offense but stay out of my elevator LOL.

As I was reading your post and prior to getting to the above quote, I was thinking lactose intolerrance (LI).

I am LI for about six years now and can remember the first day it hit me as well as the meal (cheese raviolis). I pretty much adjusted my diet. I use fat free Lactate milk, stay away from yogurt, probably the number one killer for me. I had to experiment with protein powders. Lactose is a sugar, so low sugar, non milk based powders and bars. Metrex killed me. I used optimum whey, they even advertise low lactose on the packaging.

I eat a lot of cottage cheese and use lactate pills when eating it. Maybe you should try these pills. Take one with a dairy item and see if you still have the problems. I use any generic brand but it must contain 9000fcc lactase units. It is not a cure all and I still get gas but not as severe.

Give them a whirl.. good luck.

Scott

Thanks Scott, I'll give that a shot.

I have nasty reactions from MetRx protein powder as well, it feels like it's just swelling in my belly,- gag me.

Never thought of taking the lactaid pills just as a test to see if it affects my symptoms....that would give me some very definitive insight. Good idea, thank you!

I've found gas to be an issue when my diet is undergoing changes. Takes a week to adjust and then I'm fine. Are you constantly adjusting your diet? If it is not steady that could be part of the problem.
