Good breakfast cereals and problems I see...


One thing I notice and trips me up when looking, seems I am constantly looking, for a good cereal is the nurtrional facts on alot of these cereals use different serving sizes. At first when looking at the facts on the box going from cereal to cereal on the isle this threw me off when I actually found a cereal, took it home and then noticed. I have been looking at:

Weetabix
serving size is 100g I am guessing 1.5 cups
67.2g of carbs net / 1/2 cup serving 22.4g
6.9g fiber(seems really low to me) / 1/2 cup serving 2.3g fiber
21.9g sugar / 1/2 cup serving 7.3g
10.3g protein / 1/2 cup serving 3.43g
5.8g fat / 1/2 cup serving 1.93g (virtually 0 saturated fat)

Fiber one
serving size 1/2 cup(30g)
24g carbs net
14g fiber(seems to be very good)
0g sugar
2g protein
1 g fat (no saturated)

Kelloggs All Bran
serving size 1/2 cup (31g)
23g carbs net
10g fiber
6g sugar
4g protein
1g fat (no saturated)

Kelloggs All Bran Extra Fiber
serving size 1/2 cup(26g)
20g carbs net
13g fiber
0 sugar
3g protein
1g fat (no saturated)

Kashi Go Lean
serving size 1 cup 52g( I am going to break it down to 1/2 cup or 26g) so we can keep all serving sizes roughly the same
15g carbs net
5g fiber
3g sugar
6.5g protein
.5g fat (no saturated)

These are the ones I have so far. It seems to me that the Fiber One and the All Bran Extra Fiber are the cereal's with the most fiber per serving with no sugars. It looks like all these cereals listed are not processed per say as much as some others. The thing that concerns me about the All Bran Extra Fiber is the high fructose corn syrup and the wheat flour in the ingredients. Maybe this is still OK because all in all I think the All Bran Extra Fiber meets all the criteria I need for a healthy, cutting fat diet breakfast cereal with the most fiber and least other carbs per serving. The Fiber One looks good also but the ingredients have all kinds of stuff listed that I have not a clue as to how they affect the body.Can anybody help me break all this info I gathered down and help me make the correct choice?

While I grew up eating tons of cold cereal, I totally avoid it now. They represent super-processed grains ... far from their natural state. While some are no doubt better than others, I'm really not in a position to recommend any of them. Your method of evaluation seems responsible. I'm sure you'll make a good choice.

Boy I sure like cold cereal in the morning with some milk but maybe a better choice to avoid the milk all together and just eat some oatmeal,banana and 2 whole eggs. I could probably deal with that.

I wouldn't worry too much about the cereal you have in the morning...hell, if Jeff Willet (IFBB Pro Natural Bodybuilder) can get away with eating Frosted Flakes for breakfast every morning (besides pre-contest time), I am sure you can get away eating your wheaties without much worry!

The differences I notice in that article is that jeff is working out after that meal and he is already fit. I have 17% BF and do not work out until later in the day(evening). Would that still apply?

I would think it would still apply. I work out at night as well, not in the morning. You see, when you wake up, your body is basically in a catabolic (non-growth) state. It is craving carbs, protein and nutrients in general. I am not saying you can basically eat junkfood and should go and eat cake, pies and overstuff yourself, or anything like that. But, your body is craving nutrients and carbs (even simple carbs) along with some quality protein is a great meal to jumpstart your metabolism. And you don't have to worry about skimping on breakfast either, unless you are REALLY watching your calorie intake.

Your body will make use of what you take in for your first meal of the day. You want it to be a good quality meal with ample carbs and protein, that is what matters most. Even the simple sugars contained in most cereal will have a positive affect at this time when combined with a good protein source. Your body will essentially be turned from a catabolic state to a anabolic state.

Yes, Jeff is already fit, but remaining fit and becoming even more fit is first priority on his list. That article you read was an answer posted back in 2002...he turned Pro in 2003. I doubt he would be consuming meals that would not benefit him in hopes of becoming one of the best natural bodybuilders of all time. He is a very intelligent guy who is always watching what he eats, and does not eat anything that does not serve a positive purpose. He had a lot on the line in order to climb to the top of the amateur ranks and accomplish his lifelong dream of turning pro. A lot can be learned from a guy like that.

I gotcha. I am going to try the All Bran extra fiber against the Fiber One and see which I like better. I will get some simple carbs from the whole milk I drink with it along with some good fat and protein from the 2 eggs and I always eat a banana. I think I am getting enough fiber because I have gas all freakin day and very good bowel movements, wasn't sure if you wanted to know that or not, lol

Ok, I have found that both the fiberone and Allbran are processed and not natural. Going to have to try something different. Any ideas for something all natural with tons of fiber and somewhat low on "other" carbohydrates?

I eat cheerios with some honey and then i eat a egg salad sandwich and then couple hours after that i have a protein shake and oatmeal and banana. I just love adding that bowl of cereal in in the morning. I love cheerios!! haha The cereal hasnt bothered me much.

It prob is but i still love it and still gonna eat it. All i know is that its gotta be betta then Froot loops and fruity pebbles and stuff liek that. Which those are my fav also but i havent had them for years.

LOL, you are right with that second sentance. I wish I could eat that crap. You are making my mouth water. Why did you even have to bring that stuff up for?

Ok, anybody with any ideas on high fiber, relatively low sugar and saturated fat un-processed organic cold cereal?

This stuff looks ok I guess. It is relatively low in sugar, 9g of fiber and low fat.

which is:

Total Fat 33 g
Saturated Fat 9 g

and I was thinking that instead of 2 cups whole milk and 2 whole eggs and a banana I could do this with skim milk. The thing I worry about is the sugar because the whole and skim will have about the same amount. Most of the sugar will be fructose since it is all natural so I am thinking it might be a pretty good cereal. Remember I want unprocessed foods. Does it look like I am heading in the right direction?

or some of the othe Kashi boxed cereals. I've never tried it because if I ended up liking it the cost would be prohibitive.

When I have cereals they are usually cooked grains with butter and salt like: millet (my favourite), quinoa, buckwheat, sweet brown rice, 5-12 grain cereal, oat bran and oatmeal.

A while back when visiting North Carolina I tried grits with bacon drippings. MMmmmmmmmmmmmm! I would not do that every day though.
