Great book!

HEy all,

I just picked up a book that I had heard about called Resteraunt Confidential and I must say it is an EXCELLENT book.

It gives a semi-history of fast food resteraunts and a number of interesting facts (IE: 34% of Calories are consumed outside the home and that number rises to 45% for men ages 18-39). It also has a "Resteraunt Hall of Shame" that tells of some of the worst meals to get heh.

It then tells nutritonal facts for food that is otherwise impossible to get (As in table resteraunts that do not post them anywhere). It gives alternatives food choices and also tips for eating out at each type of resteraunt (Greek, Itialian, Mexican, etc..)

All in all a very good book with many medical studies and information. I highly reccomend it as it is a great collection to my personal nutriton library =)

I hate restaurants, First It's ridiculously expensive in Canada to eat out.15% tax then the service is 10 - 15% tip. So your not even eating 30% of the costs. Forget about getting a decent bottle of wine for less than $30 when it's like $10-13 at the wine store.

For what it costs for an adult couple to eat a good meal with a good bottle of wine I can go to the market buy the best foods and 3 bottles of wine and treat my Girfriend and I and four of our friends to a great dining experience without the pitfalls of walking in to the wrong restaurant with poor service and worst yet crappy food.

If the book could get me %20 discounts that would be nice

Hmm. I was looking at that book the other day. I read both Fast Food Nation and Fat Land, which are excellent books. And then I immediately passed them along to various friends and family members.

My mom refuses to eat burgers from Fast Food places now. *evil laughs and rubs hands together*

I never eat out at restaraunts because as said above, its expensive and unhealthy. I can live off $50 a week in groceries and that feeds me all 6 meals and its much healthier.

The book was pretty much interesting reading for me but I have shown it to a few people who were blown away by the nutritional facts. People just dont seem to grasp HOW unealthy most food is. They *know* its bad for them but they wont really believe it until they see the facts.

Like my mom would eat at Dairy Queen all the time and I would tell her "Mom that is totally unhealthy" and she would be like "I know, but its soooo good". Then one day I showed her the nutritional facts for what she ate and now she doesnt eat it. I was like why the hell did you have to see it before you understood it was unhealthy?

::sighs::

Hee hee hee, my mom is so cute. She used to hit the gym with me a few days every week. At that gym, they sold protein shakes they'd blend up at the counter. My mom began to sneak off to the gym on her own, but wasn't losing any weight. I was absolutely baffled until I discovered she had been hitting Burger King after her hour long session at the gym for a large chocolate shake. Hahahaha, I just about had a heart attack.

But I agree. When I look back at my old eating habits [which were quite atrocious- macaroni and cheese about 3 times a week, fast food at least 4-5 times a week, etc], I'm actually surprised I didn't weigh more than what I did at my heaviest weight. Yikes. I could NEVER go back to eating that way...I do like to dine out occasionally, but it's such a rarity considering I'm a "poor" college student. I get to eat out now maybe once a month.

A restaurant is business to make money. To make money they need to buy the least expensive food and make sure it taste great. Healthy is not their biggest concern. I never recall ever saying

"Wow, those raw carrots sticks at Joe's Deli were just delicious!"

Yes they were deep batter fried then served with cheapest hydrogenated oil based salty dip.

Talking

I totally agree w/ya sillygirl. Down at college there are NEVER chances to eat out which is a good thing but the one thing that sucks is partying down there. When you go out at night like 2-3 days a week and drink whatever, (beer, rum&cokes, etc...) it's hard to control when with all your buddies. This year i'm gonna try to stick to Mich Ultra and Miller lite. I like miller lite and it only has like 3.2 or 3.6 carbs in it, which ain't bad at all considering ultra has 2.6. 3 more weeks till school starts back up and the workload begins. Wish me luck
