Hardee's 'Monster' burger!
Hardee's unveils new 'Monster'
Fast-food chain's new burger -- with 1,400 calories and 107 grams of fat -- will cost you $5.49.
November 15, 2004: 6:42 PM EST
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Fans of Hardee's new "Monster Thickburger" may end up making "Big Mac" lovers look like waif-like supermodels.
As many fast-food restaurants cut back the fat and calories in their offerings, Hardee's Food Systems Inc. is betting that Americans are ready to sink their teeth into its new and improved "Monster" burger.
St. Louis-based Hardee's said its new burger boasts two 1/3-pound slabs of Angus beef, four strips of bacon, three slices of American cheese and some mayonnaise -- all on a buttered, toasted, sesame seed bun.
The "Monster Thickburger" will cost about $5.49, Hardee's said. But chowing down on the 1,420-calorie burger, which contains 107 grams of fat, will cost around $7 with fries and a soda.
"The (original) 'Monster Burger' was one of our most popular menu items," Brad Haley, executive vice president of marketing for Hardee's, said in a statement. "(But) it's now a 'Thickburger.'"
Many fast-food chains, including McDonald's (Research) and Wendy's International (Research), have tried to offer healthier menu items to cater to Americans on low-fat, low-carb diets.
But Hardee's said the "Monster Thickburger" is not all it has to offer on its menu.
"In about 30 days, we will be introducing a BBQ chicken sandwich that would only have 4 grams of fat and 300 calories. We just have a wide range of selections for everybody," Haley said.
Hardee's is owned by CKE Restaurants (Research) of Carpinteria, Calif., whose stock rose about 1 percent Monday.

1,400 calories? Good Lord. I weep for America.
I'm a believer in personal responsibility and making the right choices as it pertains to wellness, but fast-food purveryors sure aren't making it any easier for the masses, huh?

Can someone please tell me the difference between the ethical practices of the fast-food industry and the tobacco-industry, because I fail to see it.

The ethics aren't the suppliers responsibility, that belongs to the user. After all, the consumer is the one who has to live with the consquenses of their actions. So long as the downside of using the product are well publicized I say let the consumer beware.
Now pass me a Monster Burger. Lip smackin' good!

Iron is right. They didn't make you buy it and eat it (or smoke it)! That is your responsibility. But they make it as attractive as possible to think you want it, persuade you buy it and encourage you eat it.

I saw this item on the news on Tuesday night. I guess we are blessed to live in a democracy - a free society. I can't say that I would never eat one. I get away with eating over 1200 calories every Thursday on pizza night when I eat 1/2 a large green olive Pizza Pizza (no pepperoni and no trans fat, but the sodium is high).
Never mind - I probably wouldn't eat one. I'm not a big fan of takeout burgers.
Moderation is a wonderful skill.

This will soon be a staple in my bulking diet. Will consume for 5 meals a day (only other meal will be my 50/50 maltodextrin/dextrose PWO shake that IONOR swears by, since this burger is not optimal PWO nutrition) I will go from 150 - 225lbs within 2 months. I may also be featured on the sequel to Supersize Me.
And just for clarification, this burger will be available in Carls Jr (west coast of Hardees) correct? Probably call it a super-duper infamous star or somehting.

Individual responsibility for drawing the line is exactly that ... 'individual'. Some people may not eat Hardees' Monster burgers, but they'll eat abusive amounts of ice cream (I used to : ), soda pop, chips & salsa, and/or ... [the list goes on & on].

I guess they don't see the lawsuits that can come out of this in a few years.
I think this is a very stupid move on hardees part...no body needs that kind of burger..

Wow, this is great news!!! Gonna head down to Hardee's immediately and start eating.
Don't get me wrong, I'll work it off with my Thighmaster, Ab Roller and elastic exercise bands as I've always done in the past.
I am currently salivating profusely, much like a large, hungry dog.

That's kind of silly, if you want really large burgers you can get them anywhere. You can go into MacDonalds and order a quarter pounder with four patties if yout want, a triple big mac, etc. . Its not the healthiest food in the world to eat, only because they fry with highly polyunsaturted fats, but its not like eating this burger is what makes fat people fat.

What makes people fat is eating that burger and not exercising!!!
The only reason people go and buy these stupid burgers is because they are too darn lazy to get in the kitchen and cook!!! Man, this is so easy. Go to the store and buy some 96% lean ground beef. Hook up two major patties and throw them on the George Foreman Grill. Grab yourself a low carb bun or a wheat tortilla, or just eat them like I do, without the bun. Throw some fat-free cheese on top, drown it in mustard, ketchup, no-salt salt alternative, and pepper, and have some lettuce and tomatoe on the side. Takes less than 10 minutes to make and is much healthier. But alas...people are too lazy.
