Ketone sticks?

I was telling my friend that I wanted to loose about 5 lbs or so by thanksgiving. I know she's not a professional so that's why I am asking here. She told me to eat about 30 grams of healthy carbs a day, at about 1000 calories. She told me to go buy keytone sticks? To make sure that my body in ketosis, and that if the sticks showed that I was then I would drop the weight fast? any info on this?

Ketone sticks are a good way of finding out whether you are in ketosis... but they can be misleading... and you won't go into ketosis very easily by eating 30 grams of carbs...
Ketosis in simple terms is when your body starts burning its own fat for its main source of energy... by-products of this (ketones) are then gotten rid of through your urine...
But extreme dehydration can also cause the stick to change colour... so I wouldn't use the sticks as the end all and be all to monitoring your success... but it's a good start.

I don't know how sound that idea is. 30g carbs a day and only 1000 calories sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I don't know if pissing on a stick sounds like a real grand idea eithor, but hey people have done stranger things to lose weight.

here's a good link to the advantages and disadvantages of ketosis

the biggest disadvantage i can see is the risk of muscle catabolism (loss) from potentially low glycogen levels

i don't like diets like this that promote extreme (and generally short-term) changes to what you eat, rather for me its about adopting the correct 'lifestyle' because this is something you can do long-term.

people constantly seem to chase that elusive 'lose fat quick scheme' and the damage they can potentially do to themselves physically or psychologically usually outweigh the claimed benefits.

patience is much healthier.

i discuss these concepts and put some links to low-carb ideas in this thread
