question about protein count

one of my favourite cereals is kashi's GoLean Crunch. i was impressed with the 10 grams of protein listed on the nutrition panel, but when i looked at the front, it says "10 grams of protein" and also "6.25 grams of soy protein".

forgive my squirrelish ignorance, but wouldn't that therefore be 16.25 grams, not ten?

It is 10 grams of protein, including the soy protein. I know how it might be misleading though the way its presented. Maybe they are hoping for a person to mistake it for 16.25..

Good marketing strategy

nope - it specifically mentions the 10 grams of protein "in addition to" 6.25 grams of soy protein.

They are using marketing to make you believe something that isn't. It is 10 grams protein but 6 is from soy. Trust me I have a box here. Did you notice the second ingredient is soy protein concentrate?

Assume it's 10, better to have a little more protein than you need rather than less than you need.

I also have the box. It advertises 9 grams of protein and 6.25 grams of soy protein. They advertise the 9 grams of protein because that is the total amount, and it is good for you, and then they advertise the soy protein, because that is an entirely separate idea- out of the 9 grams of P, 6 is soy, so it's "extra special good" for you.

I really like this cereal, too. I mix it with cottage cheese and flaxseed meal, and sometimes fruit, for breakfast.

I was going to ask the same question a few weeks back but forgot. All I know is that I love that stuff. :

Considering the calorie count per serving, there's no room for an 'additional' 6.25 grams of protein.

In my sports and nutrition book the conclusion to the amount of protein for mass gain is revealed. Eating too much protein is unlikely to be harmful but it certainly offers no further advantages.

Also a recommened intake of protein for mass gain should be between 1.8-2.0g / kg body weight, is recommened. For example if you weigh 80kg you would need between 144 and 160g of protein a day. Studies show that increasing your intake above 2.0g/kg body weight produces no further benefit.

This has been debated a million times on this board and everywhere else. I say it's better to have a little bit more than you need than not enough.

Bought some of that today. When the total is gone, I'm trying it. Hope it is close to as good as everyone says. Of course unless it's made with doggy doo, it couldn't be worse than total.

sorry - i doubt those studies used powerlifters as part of their test subjects. when the biggest guys in sports all take 2g *per pound* of bodyweight or more, i tend to listen to them rather than some skinny dude in a lab coat.
