Sleep Eating Problems, Need Feedback!

For quite some time now (I'd have to say at least 6 months) virtually every night I will wake up after initially falling asleep and "sleep eat". It's almost always about an hour after first falling asleep and can occur more than once throughout the night. It's hard to describe for people who don't understand what it is, but I'll do my best to describe my situation and what happens to my recollection.

I will wake up about an hour after falling asleep, and will be in a sleep walking state of mind finding myself in the kitchen. I really don't recall walking out of my bedroom door, or the trip to the kitchen, but once I'm eating I sort of "come to" a little bit more but continue eating. I eat a lot of different things, but it's usually unhealthy things that my family has in the house (cookies, ice cream, pie, etc etc.). Now, fully awake I have no desire to eat these things, and find it extremely easy to resist. My diet is almost perfect during the day, and I feel great because of it, however, i don't feel so great from the sleep eating. It disturbs my sleep, I feel extremely guilty the next day, and I get the food hangovers.

So I'm looking for advice or help from anyone that knows a bit about this. I have read up about it online, and for the most part it's mental and physical stress or something else going on in the mind that triggers it to happen. I sort of feel that its of danger to my health in more than a few ways. But the thing that urks me the most about it is how it appears to be stalling gains and fat loss in the gym for me. Also as another note, like many of us Americans, I do not have health insurance, and seeing a specialist about this problem seems unlikely, but it may have to come to that. I'm just seeking advice on here first because I do not know what to do, im almost afraid to fall asleep at night because of it!

I think you should ask your family doctor about this and possibly get a referral. I know you don't have insurance, but I really think that would be best. This can affect your health in so many ways, not just the eating, but also your sleep cannot be good during those times.
