Some Idea's For a Good Breakfast?


Since I have school in the morning and dont get a chance to workout after my first or second meal, i was just wondering what would be some good ideas for breakfast would be. Is somthing like Oatmeal (which i personally love) good for breakfast, even if I wont be workingout until later in the day. Or does Oatmeal have a high GI level? Also, I really took a fonding to a cereal made my a company called "Kashi" and the cereal is called GoLean. Their website is www.kashi.com (for nutritional info.) I was just wondering if Oatmeal and/or the GoLean cereal is a good breakfast, and weather or not they are considered "starchy carbs" or not. I'd really love the help, thanks!

Oatmeal is good, but add some protein in there too. Some people, I have read, put protein powder in the oatmeal. I tried it and thought I was going to lose my breakfast. It was so horrible, but to each their own I guess. Some egg whites would be good or a breakfast (lean) steak. I like to make 2 scrambled egg whites on a piece of whole wheat bread. Of course, I'm little so that might not be enough food for some people, but it fills me up.

I also like Kellogs All Bran. I put 1/2c. in a dish and put some water it in and put it in the microwave for a minute or so. It mushes up into a very quick hot cereal that's really good topped with a bit of Splenda and 1 Tbsp of cream. Again, I have heard some people put their protein powder in this too, but that would just make me gag.

Hard boiled egg whites is an easy way to get quick protein in the morning (make them the night before) or also low-fat cottage cheese is a good protein sourse as well. Sometimes when I'm in a big hurry I throw cottage cheese, frozen strawberries, and a bit of skim milk in the blender for a fast shake.

Hope this helps. I'm sure Cursor and the other guys will have a lot more advice. Breakfast is always the hardest for me because I just don't like to eat in the morning. Blech.

That cereal looks good. Do you buy it at the grocery store or online? I have to order EVERYTHING online because I can't get jack over here. How does it taste?!?

One problem with cereals is that they represent the ultimate in processed foods. Jack LaLanne's motto is, "If man makes it, then don't eat it." While I feel that's a bit restrictive and extreme, there is some wisdom in it.

My wife likes her oatmeal:
1/3 cup rolled oats
2/3 cup non fat milk
3/4 scoop soy
2 tsp brown sugar
dash cinnamon
Heat the milk (covered) in the microwave, stir in the dry ingredients (soy last). Cover and let set for 3 minutes or so. Consider adding peach slices, applesauce or other fruit.

Eggs are typically at the core of what I prepare for breakfast. I (we) particularly like our egg burritos. I'll post a recipe in the cursor-recipe thread.

IMHO, oatmeal is great, however, I agree with above comments that you also must have some quality protein. I make it easy by adding four egg whites to (in) my cooked oatmeal. It sounds awful, but is really very good. For speed, I microwave the oatmeal for 30 seconds, add the egg whites directly in my bowl and finish by microwaving anothher couple of minutes to set egg whites.

Another suggestion: I try to avoid juices (too much sugar) and prefer whole fruit instead - great fiber; i.e.: whole orange instead of orange juice.

in response to kitara on the cereal: i buy it right at the supermarket in the cereal section. personally i love the stuff.



about the egg whites in the oatmeal, do the egg whites get cooked enough that way (i dont really want to eat raw eggs or antyhing). or would it work just as good to have a few cooked (hard-boiled) egg whites along with the oatmeal?

should i try to avoid eating Oatmeal late at night? Or would Oatmeal still be ok like around 6 or 7 pm mixed with some protein powder?

More than anything else, it depends on how much you are going to have. While my current nutrition plan is for 2800 calories per day, I limit my evening meal to just 18 grams of carb for that last meal. It would probably be hard for me to fit it in. I'd have to have such a small portion, that it'd leave me feeling hungry. I'd much rather eat a bunch of steamed cauliflower or broccoli (which would allow for much more bulk, and consequential feeling of being full).

Hey cursor,

Personally i hate cauliflower and brocolli although it may be ive never had them prepared in a good way. Do you have any suggestions for cooking them that I could try?

Keep in mind im a new cook (I was a fast food/cereal/microwave junkie for years) so treat me like a newbie hehe =)

Limp, over-cooked and soggy is never any good. Have you tried steaming your own? About eight minutes over steam should do it. If you want more specific details, I'll certainly write em up.

I agree with Cursor. I steam all my veggies. If they are fresh they turn out pretty good, but I always end up overcooking frozen ones, but they are still not bad. My steamer pot is my favorite piece of kitchenware. You can get a cheap one too for about $5.00 that can go in pretty much any pot.

I also really like to eat veggies raw.
