Steel Cut Oatmeal??

hey guys,

I just bought some organic steel cut oatmeal... it looks quite different then my usual 100% natural rolled oats....

they are very small granola size pieces,,, but even smaller... Apparently these are les processed then the natural rolled oats... check links below..

anyone like to eat these instead of regular rolled oats??

http://www.countrychoicenaturals.com/product.asp?id=31

here is something saying how they are better then rolled oats?

tigz, I've heard of that before, but never tried it. How does it compare in cost to the regular oats? I think I'll probably stick with the regular oats. I'm spending enough on everything else, not to mention the fact that it's time to be a new weight set. Just another expense...lol
This whole weightlifting and health thing can get quite expensive!

The difference between rolled oats and steel cut oats is the way they are processed.

Rolled oats are produced by a process that steams the grain to loosen the husks, then removes the hull, slices the grain, and presses it between steel rollers to create oat flakes.

Steel cut oats are made by slicing or cracking the whole kernel into very coarse, coarse, medium or fine bits to enable the grain to cook faster (they are also known as Irish or Scottish Oats). The more the grain is processed the quicker it cooks and digests.

The least processed oats are whole oat groats. This is the entire grain with the outer hull removed. Groats provide a sweet nutty taste with a slight hint of pecan and are often used for pilafs, soups and salads. I don't like the groats for oatmeal but it is a personal preference thing.

the steel cut for me is identical in price to the rolled oats... I get it at a store called "Trader Joes" here in the bay area, California...

true true... fitness is expensive..

especially when I want an entire gym in my home! hehehe... I have hex dumbells from 10 lbs all the way to 80 lbs so far... a couple dumbell racks.. olympic squat cage (with big oympic weight set).... bench press and other vaious bench in the garage.... tons of standard plates.... weight trees..bars... gloves... etc etc etc.!!!

hehe.. and then the food part.! i just spent 150 bux in freggin groceries yesterday.! man ... I definitely hear ya on the expenses...

but its my main passion and hobby so i dont mind.! plus Im single ..so no Gf to blow all my money on.. heh

anyways back to the steel cut oatmeal... its much closer to cream of wheat in texture and taste... if that is yur sort of thing.. i say go for it.. otherwise stick to what works for ya. I kinda bought it to switch things up a little.. keep my mornings exciting with new textures for the pallate...

take care,

Trevor

Lucky you. I have only an 8 X 10 foot area in my den to work with so whatever I get has to fit in that area. And with what I'm looking at buying, it will be a tight fit. I can't put anything in my garage. Wife parks her car there and we're getting ready to convert it into a main bed and bath anyway. So 8 X 10 is all I've got.

My problem is adding my food bill on to the rest of my food bill (for four other people). Buying all these chicken breasts, out-of-season veggies, and all these supplements gets expensive in a heart beat.

Heck, it's getting to be a passion with me now. Before January 12th of last year, I could not have cared less about working out. I was perfectly happy and content with my 5'6" 221 pound self. Until that life changing event.....!!!
Started lifting March 1st of last year and the weight fell off. Started taking creatine a month or two ago and have seen some really nice gains. Now I'm really starting to get pumped about all of this.

I think I'll just stick to the regular oats. I did eat the quick cooking oats for quite a while and switched over to the regular oats that cook in three to five minutes. I'm very happy with that. My wife says one day soon I will get burned out on oatmeal. Maybe so, but I don't see it happening any time soon.

I've just had a pack of Oats bought for me, different to my norm - the old ones i got were quite shredded, makes a kinda thick porridge. These ones are what you'd expect to see in a Muesli, just having my first bowl now, they taste 'real', more natural. Still trying to get a hold of the packet to find the stats on them, but go the natural oats :
