Yah, you don't really have a choice on where to line up or stand, you are put in order of your competitor number and then you have to file out onstage in that order. So that guy didn't have a choice of who to be next to.

Yah, there were some "not-so-great" physiques there, but most were top-notch, and super impressive, it was an eye-opener about what really can be achieved naturally.

Thanks for the compliments, and yes, building my upper chest, along with my hams and calves a little more is going to be a big priority this offseason in order to fully balance out my physique. Thanks for the critique!

Todd,

Just curious…why do you suppose your quads are so much more developed than your hams. Is this a common occurrence with body builders?

What are you going to do different in attempt to catch your quads up with your hams?

I started working my quads harder/heavier before really concentrating on my hamstrings directly with heavier weights, which I should have been doing all along, that is why I believe they have some catching up to do. When I began to realize I needed big quad size, I have just been torturing them and my quads have responded amazingly....now I need to put that same kind of intensity into basic lifts for the hamstrings and continue to increase my intensity for them. Since incorporating heavy stiff-leg deadlifts into my routines and following Max OT to a "T", I have seen good hamstring improvement, but there is always room for more improvement. Stiff-leg dead lifts I believe are a key movement for awesome hamstring development...I plan on really getting that movement down pat and working up to and beyond my current bests for that lift.

Todd,

What would you say contributed most to developing your quads?

Going heavy to positive failure for EACH and EVERY working set, making sure I am using as much weight as I can handle to reach that positive failure within the 4-6 rep range while using a full range of motion and good form. That is what has contributed most....that, and sticking to a smart diet geared towards providing my body what it needs to constantly keep growing. Sticking to heavy compound movements is key for stimulating the deepest (and most) muscle fibers possible, that is what I focus on.

In the offseason, before I started dieting down (and the last time I measured), they were just about 18 inches, I am sure they are slightly less than that now, having dieted so hardcore for my contest, but I plan to improve my calves even more....my calves, hamstrings and upper chest are what I am focusing on now to bring more into balance with the rest of my body for next year's competitions, all while still enhancing my strong points.

I don't regularly measure my body parts all that much, or measure my body fat %, but rather go by how I look and whether or not my body is balanced....I use the mirror as my measuring tool and that is about it.

Man awesome pics and awesome work Todd. My only criticism is on your hair, no offence but it takes away from your hard work. Get onto that, and keep at it, you're a real inspiration.

Todd, just reading through some journals to get a few ideas on building mass and I came across yours. Great pics and awesome job at the contest!!! Congrats! Quick question... What exercises are you currently doing for calves and how many reps/sets? Mine are REALLY stubborn, so any advice would be welcome. Keep up the hard work! -Dan

My hair was long at the time, yes, but it's cut now, so that's all good now! : Thank you for the kind comments bro!

The only exercises I do for my calves are the following ones listed below. I end up doing only 2 of the following exercises at any one time...and I train them ONCE per week, just like any other body part. So when all is said and done, I end up doing 2 light warm-up sets for the first exercise. Then, I do 1 weight acclimation set (a set using a weight that is about 10 pounds below the weight i'd use for my main sets..and I do 3 reps only). Then, I go onto do 2 main sets, as shown below for each exercise. In total, I end up doing 4 heavy main sets, that is it. I go heavy and hard on these tho, giving each main set my 100% concentration and intensity.

Standing Calf Raises (Machine) - 2 sets of 4-6 reps
Leg Press Machine (Toe Presses) - 2 sets 4-6 reps
Seated Calf Raises - 2 sets 4-6 reps

I go heavy as I can for 4-6 reps while making sure I get a FULL stretch at the bottom and FULL contraction at the top of EACH rep. If I can't get this, then I know the weight is too heavy. Make sure to stretch your calves between sets and focus 100% intensity to be applied each and every set! :

If your calves are a weak point, don't train them more often or with more sets, just train them harder...more intensely, and intelligently. Hit them hard, then go and eat your post-workout meal, be consistent with your diet, your rest, your daily water intake and supplementation. Do this, and over time, they will catch up and grow nicely!
