Ab workouts on the Recumbent Bike

Hi all!

I just bought a recumbent bike, and its awesome!! I get to mix in some of my upper body strength training while riding!

I'm out of ideas on ab workouts though, am I out of luck on this one or does someone have any creative ideas?

I don't have to worry about looking like a fool cuz I'm doing it out of the comfort of my own home! =D

I'm a little confused. Isn't a recumbent bike about cardio?

I'm not sure there is a benefit from trying to mix strength and cardio together at the same time in this fashion.

Yeah but you can mix in some upper body work outs by lifting free weights at the same time while riding the bike. It helps cuz it raises my heart rate and therefore getting a better workout!

It's probably increasing the intensity of your cardio program. It is wise to be careful not to put yourself at risk for injury falling or stressing your joints.

I wonder whether splitting your focus like that is not taking away from your workout.

Peddling faster and/or against a higher resistance is a more activity specific way to increase your heartrate.

I agree with what Brat says here. Stay focused on the cardio workout. A dumbbell workout is a great idea for upper body strength gains, but do it on a different day than the bike workout, or at least several hours after. That way you can stay focused on proper form with the dumbbells for maximum benefit. If you are just wanting to tone, then it will only take a little extra time to do the dumbbell workout 2 or 3 of times a week

Welcome back!

Just curious, but what kind of recumbent are you getting? My wife & I got a Nordic-Track SL 728 a few months ago and love it. The seating position is nearly identical to our recumbent trike, so it's easy & comfortable to switch from riding the trike outdoors in nice weather to riding the stationary indoors when the weather is bad.

recumbant bikes are awesome. for all those Max-Otters(thats what Ill call us from now on ) out there, its what Max-Ot cardio reccomends for best use of their specific type of cardio, similar to HIIT
